Reconfigurable Add/Drop, Multiplexer/Demultiplexer Using A Transceiver With Loop-Back Function

US Patent:
7161964, Jan 9, 2007
Filed:
Sep 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/241232
Inventors:
Anthony L. Lentine - Holmdel NJ, US
Graham H. Smith - Jersey City NJ, US
Ted K. Woodward - Holmdel NJ, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04J 3/04
US Classification:
370535, 398 35
Abstract:
A reconfigurable ADD/DROP multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus is implemented by connecting a multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus to a serializer/deserializer (SERDES) apparatus having a loop-back capability. By selectively activating the loop-back functionality of the SERDES apparatus the combination can be made to function as a reconfigurable ADD/DROP multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus.

Stackable Wdm Arrangement

US Patent:
7254335, Aug 7, 2007
Filed:
Nov 8, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/008507
Inventors:
Brandon C. Collings - Middletown NJ, US
Anthony L. Lentine - Holmdel NJ, US
Martin C. Nuss - Fair Haven NJ, US
Graham Smith - Holmdel NJ, US
Ted K. Woodward - Fair Haven NJ, US
Assignee:
CIENA Corporation - Linthicum MD
International Classification:
H04J 14/02
US Classification:
398 82, 398 83
Abstract:
A module that includes both an “add-in”/“drop-out” pair of ports and a “drop-in”/“add-out” pair of ports comprises an arrangement of elements that combines an optical signal having a chosen wavelength with an optical signal applied at the “add-in” port, and outputs the combined signal at the “add-out port. ” Concurrently, the module extracts an optical signal with the same wavelength from an optical signal applied at the “drop-in” port signal, yielding an optical signal at the “drop-out” port that is missing that same wavelength. When the amount of information that needs to be sent from a first network node to a second, remote, node, is greater than that which a single wavelength can handle, a plurality of the above-described modules are interconnected within the first node by optically coupling the “add” ports in a “daisy chain” fashion and the “drop” ports in a “daisy chain” fashion, with each module operating at a different wavelength.

Apparatus And Method For Reducing The Line Rate Of Time-Multiplexed Signals

US Patent:
2002003, Mar 28, 2002
Filed:
May 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/862573
Inventors:
Anthony Lentine - Holmdel NJ, US
Graham Smith - Jersey City NJ, US
Ted Woodward - Holmdel NJ, US
International Classification:
H04J003/00
H04J003/04
US Classification:
370/521000, 370/535000, 370/540000
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for enabling the transport of a higher line rate time-multiplexed data signals (e.g., Ethernet at 10 Gb/s) at a lower line rate (e.g., SONET OC-192) and for regenerating the higher line rate time-multiplexed data signals at the receiving end. At a transmitter end, a data stream compression apparatus removes a predetermined portion of non-unique, invariant content of the higher line rate data stream thereby generating the lower line rate data stream which is transmitted over a communication link to the receiver end. At the receiver end, a data stream expansion apparatus adds back the missing predetermined portion of non-unique, invariant content to the lower line rate data stream thereby regenerating the higher line rate data stream. A data compression multiplexer apparatus is formed by combining a plurality of the data stream compression apparatuses with a data multiplexer. A data expansion demultiplexer apparatus is formed by combining a data demultiplexer with a plurality of the data stream expansion apparatuses.

Molecular Models

US Patent:
4416635, Nov 22, 1983
Filed:
Dec 24, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/334196
Inventors:
Graham M. Smith - Scotch Plains NJ
Assignee:
Merck & Co., Inc. - Rahway NJ
International Classification:
G09B 2326
US Classification:
434280
Abstract:
A molecular model of a relatively large molecule or a portion thereof is made up of a series of solid parallel and equidistant cross sections of rigid transparent plastic sheets representing space occupied by the atoms in the crystalline state. The adjacent cross sections are generated from x-ray crystal spectroscopic data providing crystal coordinates of the large molecules in computer readable form. Computer tapes of such data are used to print out numbered cross sections of the molecule showing coordinate plots of atoms intersecting such cross sections along a preselected coordinate axis. These cross sections are duplicated manually in clear rigid plastic sheets and assembled in order using appropriate spacer blocks to maintain accurate spacing of the adjacent cross section.
