Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes an elongated shaft having a distal portion and a proximal portion coupled to a housing. An inner shaft member extends at least partially through the elongated shaft and is selectively movable in a longitudinal direction. An end effector is supported by the distal portion of the elongated shaft. The end effector includes upper and lower jaw members pivotally coupled to the distal portion of the elongated shaft about a pivot axis and including a pair of laterally spaced flanges. The pairs of flanges of the jaw members are arranged in an offset configuration such that one flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally exterior side of a corresponding flange of the lower jaw member, and the other flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally interior side of the other flange of the lower jaw member.

Surgical Forceps

US Patent:
2014005, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Oct 28, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/064702
Inventors:
GRANT T. SIMS - LITTLETON CO, US
CHASE COLLINGS - HAYDEN ID, US
Assignee:
COVIDIEN LP - Mansfield MA
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
A61B 17/29
US Classification:
606 34, 606205
Abstract:
A forceps includes an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members. One (or both) of the first and second jaw members is moveable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One (or both) of the jaw members includes a jaw frame a disposable jaw housing and an elastomeric ring member. The disposable jaw housing is releasably engageable with the jaw frame. The elastomeric ring member is removably positionable about a distal end of the jaw housing. The elastomeric ring member is configured to define a gap distance between the first and second jaw members upon movement of the first and second jaw members to the approximated position.

Electrosurgical Systems And Methods

US Patent:
2022040, Dec 22, 2022
Filed:
Mar 23, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/702629
Inventors:
- Mansfield MA, US
Grant T. Sims - Boulder CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
G06N 20/00
A61B 34/30
Abstract:
A method of sealing tissue includes attempting to grasp tissue between first and second jaw members of an end effector assembly of an electrosurgical instrument, attempting to conduct electrosurgical energy between the first and second jaw members, and determining, based on impedance feedback from the electrosurgical energy, whether an error exists. In a case where no error is detected, the method includes implementing a tissue treating algorithm to treat tissue grasped between the first and second jaw members. The tissue treating algorithm includes conducting electrosurgical energy between the first and second jaw members and through tissue grasped therebetween. In a case where an error is detected, the method includes determining, based on additional feedback data, a cause of the error, and outputting an alarm indicating the error and the cause of the error.

Continuous Rotation Cable For Surgical Instrument

US Patent:
2022025, Aug 18, 2022
Filed:
Feb 12, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/174676
Inventors:
- Mansfield MA, US
Craig V. Krastins - Arvada CO, US
Jennifer L. Rich - Parker CO, US
Riley A. Pepia - Denver CO, US
Grant T. Sims - Boulder CO, US
Daniel W. Mercier - Erie CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
Abstract:
A coupling for an electrosurgical cable of a surgical instrument includes insulative contact collars arranged in a stack-like manner, each contact collar having a flange supporting a contact ring thereon. The contact rings configured for electrical engagement with electrical leads of the electrosurgical cable. Contact wires configured to engage corresponding contact rings at one end and a jumper wire at the other end thereof, the jumper wires, in turn, couple to an activation switch of the surgical instrument. A locking bobbin envelops the contact collars to lock contact wires in secure engagement with the contact rings. The locking bobbin locks within the surgical instrument preventing the contact wires from rotating within the surgical instrument while permitting the contact collars, the contact rings and the electrosurgical cable to rotate relative to the surgical instrument.

Smoke Evacuation Instrument With Illumination Nozzle

US Patent:
2023010, Apr 6, 2023
Filed:
Aug 16, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/888550
Inventors:

Grant T. Sims - Boulder CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
A61B 90/30
Abstract:
An electrosurgical smoke evacuation pencil includes a handle housing, a suction conduit, an electrode, and a nozzle. The handle housing has a proximal end portion and a distal end portion and defines a lumen therethrough. The suction conduit is coupled to the handle housing and is configured to couple the electrosurgical pencil to a smoke evacuator. The electrode extends from the distal end portion of the handle housing and is configured to couple to a source of electrosurgical energy. The nozzle extends from the distal end portion of the handle housing and defines a lumen in fluid communication with the lumen of the handle housing. The nozzle is configured to transmit light from a light source through the nozzle and out of a distal end of the nozzle to form a light path illuminating therefrom.

Vessel Sealer With Smart Cutting

US Patent:
2023008, Mar 16, 2023

A knife limit for a surgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft extending therefrom configured to support an end effector at a distal end thereof, the end effector including first and second jaw members. One or both of the jaw members including a knife channel defined therein and extending therealong to a distal portion thereof. A knife assembly is disposed within the housing and cooperates with a trigger to translate a knife within the knife channel to the distal portion of the jaw member upon actuation thereof. A knife limit button is disposed within the housing and is configured to limit the distal translation of the knife within the knife channel upon selective actuation thereof. The knife limit button is movable between a first position allowing full translation of the knife within the knife channel and a second position limiting distal translation of the knife within the knife channel.
