Method And Apparatus For Universal Fluid Exchange

US Patent:
6890491, May 10, 2005
Filed:
Jun 10, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/872097
Inventors:
Ilya Feygin - Mountainside NJ, US
Rhett L. Affleck - Lawrenceville NY, US
Leslie A. Walling - Somerset NJ, US
Peter Kieselbach - Upper Black Eddy PA, US
Gregory Louis Kirk - Skillman NJ, US
Ian Henderson - Hopewell NJ, US
Assignee:
Pharmacopeia Drug Discovery, Inc. - Cranbury NJ
International Classification:
B01J019/00
US Classification:
422130, 422100, 422102, 422129, 422131, 436177, 436180
Abstract:
A universal fluid exchange device includes upper and lower reaction vessel supports which include pressure sealed injection and evacuation ports for each supported reaction vessel. Reaction vessels matingly engage through the injection and evacuation ports with fittings which are connected through flexible tubing to respective supplying and receiving vessels. The reaction vessels or fittings are moved into position, as required, so that reactants may be directly supplied from supplying vessels in the order and amount desired without operation of valves that can become contaminated, and so that the reaction vessels may dispel their contents into the appropriate receiving vessels. The system may be highly advantageous in applications such as combinatorial chemistry where myriad combinations of chemicals, solvents and reagents are employed.

Partitioning Device

US Patent:
5649576, Jul 22, 1997
Filed:
Feb 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/606573
Inventors:
Gregory L. Kirk - Skillman NJ
Joseph J. Brzezinski - Bangor PA
Daniel Chelsky - Moylan PA
Thirleen G. Nichols - Winterville NC
T. C. Ramaraj - Dayton NJ
Assignee:
Pharmacopeia, Inc. - Princeton NJ
International Classification:
B65B 104
US Classification:
141129
Abstract:
A system which precisely arrays small objects into a plurality of containers which comprises a vessel containing the objects in a fluid suspension; a tube, the proximal end of which is positioned substantially at the bottom of the vessel and the distal end of which is connected to a member which directs gravitationally-formed fluid drops from the distal end downward into a container positioned below said distal end; a small-objects detector, for detecting the objects in the fluid in the tube, disposed near the distal end; a drop detector connected to the member below the distal end; a device for controlling flow of the suspension through the tube by pressurizing the vessel; or device for discriminating between those signals from the small-objects detector caused by the small objects and those signals caused by other events, i. e. , not caused by the small objects; a device for comparing signals from the small-objects detector caused by the small objects with signals from the drop detector; and a device for determining the number of the objects deposited into the container. The system further comprises a positioning device for re-positioning the distal end of the tube from one to another, with timing derived from the small-objects and drop detectors.

High Throughput Solid Phase Chemical Synthesis Utilizing Thin Cylindrical Reaction Vessels Useable For Biological Assay

US Patent:
5798035, Aug 25, 1998
Filed:
Oct 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/726058
Inventors:
Gregory L. Kirk - Skillman NJ
Robert H. Grubbs - South Pasadena CA
Assignee:
Pharmacopeia, Inc. - Princeton NJ
International Classification:
C25B 1502
US Classification:
205335
Abstract:
A high throughput chemical synthesis system utilizing cylindrical reaction vessels is disclosed. Reaction vessels are utilized which include a tubular member adapted for placement of electronically readable identifying indicia thereon. The identifying indicia are representative of reaction conditions within the tubular member and of one or more reagents utilized in a reaction within the tubular members. A method of performing chemical synthesis on solid phase reactive material within a plurality of reaction vessels using a plurality of reaction stages resulting in final products and employing identifying indicia representing the reaction stages is also disclosed. The method includes reading the identifying indicia located on the reaction vessels, reacting one or more reagents within the reaction vessels under particular reaction conditions which may be determined by reading the identifying indicia, thereby synthesizing chemical compounds within the reaction vessels. The method allows chemical synthesis to occur according to a predetermined set of reactions and also allows for combinatorial chemistry to be performed utilizing random mix and split techniques. The final synthesized products may be tested for chemical or biological activity.
