Method And System For Diagnosing A Secondary Air Supply For An Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
6637191, Oct 28, 2003
Filed:
Nov 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/065820
Inventors:
Gregory Ziemba - Grosse Pointe Woods MI
Daniel V. Orzel - Westland MI
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F01N 322
US Classification:
60274, 60277, 60289, 731181
Abstract:
A method for diagnosing operational performance of a secondary air system used in an internal combustion engine. The engine produces exhaust gases. The exhaust gases pass through a catalytic converter. The engine includes an exhaust gas oxygen sensor. The secondary air system introduces air into the exhaust gas after engine start-up. The oxygen sensor produces a feedback control signal during a feedback mode for adjusting engine operating air-fuel ratio, such feedback mode being initiated at a first time. The method determines from the signal produced by the exhaust gas oxygen sensor a second time relative to the first time when the oxygen sensor signal indicates that a predetermined exhaust gas air fuel ratio is produced. The operational performance of the secondary air system is diagnosed as a function of the determined second time.

System And Method For A Stop-Start Engine

US Patent:
2020008, Mar 12, 2020
Filed:
Sep 12, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/129475
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Hussam Makkiya - Dearborn MI, US
Ahmed Awadi - Farmington Hills MI, US
Gregory Ziemba - Farmington Hills MI, US
International Classification:
F02N 11/08
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for adjusting a steering torque threshold for automatically stopping and starting a vehicle engine. In one example, a method may include, while the engine is running, determining a first steering torque threshold for inhibiting stop-start of the engine based on a steering wheel angle, and, while the engine is auto-stopped, determining a second steering torque threshold for inhibiting the stop-start based on the steering wheel angle and whether a static stop-start event is present or a rolling stop-start event is present. In this way, a non-linear hysteresis is provided for automatically stopping and starting the engine.

Active Front Steering Current Control For Engine Stop/Start Vehicles

US Patent:
2017020, Jul 20, 2017
Filed:
Jan 19, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/000567
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Attila BENAK - Koeln NRW, DE
Kirk PEBLEY - Novi MI, US
Gregory ZIEMBA - Grosse Pointe MI, US
Eric Michael RADEMACHER - Royal Oak MI, US
International Classification:
B60W 10/20
B60W 10/06
B60W 30/192
B62D 5/04
Abstract:
A vehicle includes an engine configured for autostop and autostart. The vehicle further includes an electric actuator for an active front steering system. Before the engine is autostopped, a controlled decrease in demand current for the electric actuator is initiated. After the engine is autostarted, a controlled increase in demand current for the electric actuator is initiated.
