Television System For Displaying And Recording Paths Of Motion

US Patent:
4233631, Nov 11, 1980
Filed:
Oct 4, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/948362
Inventors:
Henry W. Mahler - Newtown CT
Assignee:
CBS Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04N 522
US Classification:
358182
Abstract:
In television apparatus for producing signals for displaying simultaneously a succession of time-separated images of an object moving in an otherwise static scene, control is provided for causing a limited number of decaying stroboscopic images of successive positions of a moving object to appear behind the image representing the latest position of the moving object.

Television Picture Stabilizing System

US Patent:
4403256, Sep 6, 1983
Filed:
Nov 10, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/319845
Inventors:
Richard R. Green - Hamden CT
Henry W. Mahler - Newtown CT
John E. Siau - Darien CT
Assignee:
CBS Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04N 521
US Classification:
358222
Abstract:
The disclosed picture stabilizing system detects and measures picture unsteadiness in recorded or live video caused by an unsteady television camera and automatically eliminates the unsteadiness without destroying intentional panning and tilting of the camera. This is accomplished by selecting camera motion references within the camera field of view consisting of one horizontal edge and one vertical edge of an object which will normally be stationary, such as a door, a window, or a piece of furniture. The stabilizer "locks" onto these edges, continually measuring their motion from field to field and utilizing a frame store, makes the necessary vertical and horizontal corrections to the overall picture to eliminate such motion. The system is able to correct for movement due to random unsteadiness without interfering with planned camera movement.

Multiplex Color Television Transmission System

US Patent:
4027333, May 31, 1977
Filed:
Dec 9, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/639012
Inventors:
Arthur Kaiser - Trumbull CT
Henry W. Mahler - Newtown CT
Renville H. McMann - New Canaan CT
Assignee:
CBS Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04N 708
US Classification:
358146
Abstract:
System for transmitting and receiving two complete color television pictures from two separate sources in common synchronism wherein the odd-numbered fields of the picture from one of the sources are transmitted in alternation with even-numbered fields of the other of the sources and wherein reception and reconstruction of the two pictures is accomplished by alternately storing the successive odd- and even-numbered fields in a field store having a delay of one field plus or minus half a line and recombining the delayed fields with their respective undelayed fields to recreate the two separate pictures. By utilizing a delay of exactly one field plus or minus half a line (i. e. , 262 or 263 lines in the NTSC system), the delayed version of each of the two fields is fully interlaced positionally with its respective undelayed field, with the color subcarrier in exactly the proper phase in the preferred case of a 262 line delay, thereby to facilitate the use of line interpolation to improve the quality of the reproduced pictures.

Television System For Displaying And Recording Paths Of Motion

US Patent:
4179704, Dec 18, 1979
Filed:
Dec 27, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/864405
Inventors:
J. Kenneth Moore - Stamford CT
Arthur Kaiser - Trumbull CT
Henry W. Mahler - Newtown CT
Assignee:
CBS Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04N 522
H04N 932
H04N 718
H04N 524
US Classification:
358 22
Abstract:
Television apparatus for producing signals for displaying simultaneously a succession of separated images of an object moving over a selectable time period in an otherwise substantially static scene so that the trajectory of the object can be viewed. The effect is achieved by storing, at the start of the selectable time period, a television frame in a suitable storage device and periodically comparing the stored frame with television frames arriving subsequently during the selectable time period, and upon detection of differences between corresponding picture elements of the stored and subsequently arriving frames, substituting the picture elements that caused the detected difference in the stored frame. The system identifies such substituted picture elements and ensures that the same picture elements are not again substituted during the selectable time period. At the end of the period a video signal representing at least the picture elements substituted in the stored frame during the selectable time period is coupled to display apparatus.
