Protective Sheath For High Temperature Process Wells

US Patent:
4421169, Dec 20, 1983
Filed:
Dec 3, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/326984
Inventors:
James D. Dearth - Houston TX
Herbert B. Wolcott - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F21B 3314
F21B 3600
US Classification:
166285
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for maintaining the integrity of a cement sheath surrounding a casing in a hot subteranean zone including a layer of compressible refractory insulation surrounding the casing and at least one cement hanger slidably carried by said casing and means for limiting the movement of the hanger on the casing. The insulation layer mechanically isolates the sheath from thermal expansion of the casing and the slidable cement hanger likewise allows limited axial motion of the casing relative to the sheath without inducing tensile loads.

Charging System For Seismic Gas Exploder

US Patent:
4384632, May 24, 1983
Filed:
Jan 5, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/222809
Inventors:
Herbert A. Wolcott - Plano TX
J. Robert Fricke - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G01V 1108
G01V 138
US Classification:
181118
Abstract:
Oxygen and propane are supplied to the combustion chamber of a marine seismic gas exploder from a pair of pressure regulated gas charging cylinders. Ignition of the resultant explosive gas mixture drives a piston connected with means for creating an acoustic disturbance in the water. The outputs from the charging cylinders are fed simultaneously to a mixing manifold connected to a large orifice communicating with the combustion chamber. The ratio of gases in the resultant mixture is automatically determined by the relative volumes and pressures of the charging cylinders, which may be precisely regulated by adjustment of pistons movable within such cylinders and by gas pressure regulation. To safeguard against too rapid voiding of a small volume charging cylinder, voiding of the larger volume cylinder may be initiated first with the aid of a choke downstream of the manifold. This will create an artificial back pressure in the distribution system.

Well Flow Line Choke

US Patent:
4712579, Dec 15, 1987
Filed:
Jul 22, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/516067
Inventors:
Herbert A. Wolcott - Plano TX
James H. McHaney - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F16K 2504
US Classification:
137375
Abstract:
In a fluid flow line from a well in the earth, a choke means is employed to restrict the flow of fluids through that line. The choke has a body with apertures therein for passing fluid therethrough and an insert means in one of the apertures of the body which mates with a movable means for creating the choking restriction. The insert means extends to the fluid outlet end of the body of the choke and for a finite distance beyond and outside the body of the choke so that any blast effect that may occur due to pressure change inside the insert means is transferred by the insert means outside of the body of the choke before being released. A preferentially consumable blast receiving means is removably carried by the body of the choke at the fluid outlet end thereof and around the portion of the insert means that extends outside the body of the choke to thereby receive any such blast effect and be preferentially sacrificed to save and increase the operating life of the choke itself and any piping and valve means that may be employed downstream of the outlet end of the choke.

Collapsible Vehicular Tent

US Patent:
D299817, Feb 14, 1989
Filed:
Nov 28, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/936021
Inventors:
Herbert A. Wolcott - Dallas TX
Carol A. Feldman - Dallas TX
US Classification:
D12156

Handling Of Solids-Laden Hydrocarbonaceous Bottoms In A Retort Using Solid Heat-Carriers

US Patent:
4246093, Jan 20, 1981
Filed:
Jul 26, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/061155
Inventors:
Herbert B. Wolcott - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
C10B 4916
C10B 5306
US Classification:
208 8R
Abstract:
Crushed mined coal, oil shale or tar sands, feedstocks are retorted in a retort using heat-carrying solids to supply at least fifty percent of the heat required to produce an average retort temperature of between 700. degree. F. (371. degree. C. ) and 1200. degree. F. (649. degree. C. ) to produce hydrocarbonaceous gases and oil. The hydrocarbon oils are treated in a manner such that there is produced a bottoms fraction containing organic carbon compounds having a boiling point above 950. degree. F. and particulate inorganic matter derived from the retorted material. The bottoms fraction is fed directly or indirectly into the retort in a manner such that the bottoms fraction does not contact the reheated heat carriers before the heat carrying solids are contacted with the crushed mined feedstock. The bottoms fraction may be fed directly into the retort downstream of the point where the feedstock and heat carriers are first mixed, or the bottoms fraction may be fed into the feedstock before the feedstock enters the retort. This method of handling the bottoms fraction prevents breakage or agglomeration of the heat carrying solids.

Choke Valve

US Patent:
4638833, Jan 27, 1987
Filed:
Jan 21, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/821118
Inventors:
Herbert A. Wolcott - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F16K 134
US Classification:
137312
Abstract:
A flow line control valve is provided with internal erosion and corrosion trim liners and means for detecting for leaks in the liners. There is also provided fuller range, positive shutoff throttle means designed to reduce erosion and corrosion of the throttling parts and valve seat. The low flow rate throttling action is provided by progressive and accumulative flow through one or more stages of throttling flow passages of and by a nose end of the throttling means. Preferably the nose end is concavely tapered. Also preferably two or more stages of throttling spaced apart flow passages of increasing size are employed. Postive long lasting shut-off is assured by combining throttling and seat surfaces of different angles of taper.

Method For Injecting A Gaseous Stream Into A Hot Subterranean Zone

US Patent:
4399867, Aug 23, 1983
Filed:
May 14, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/263625
Inventors:
Herbert B. Wolcott - Plano TX
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
E21B 3600
E21B 4324
US Classification:
166261
Abstract:
A method for injecting a gaseous stream into a hot subterranean zone by positioning a casing in fluid communication with the hot subterranean zone and the surface, insulating a lower portion of the outer surface of the casing and injecting the gaseous stream into the hot subterranean zone through the casing at a rate sufficient to maintain the casing below a selected maximum temperature. An apparatus useful in the practice of the method is also disclosed.
