Use Of Two Remote Controllers In Parental Control

US Patent:
2003023, Dec 25, 2003
Filed:
Apr 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/419615
Inventors:
Douglas Macrae - Weston MA, US
Wing Leung - Arcadia CA, US
Henry Yuen - Pasadena CA, US
Andrew Duncan - Santa Monica CA, US
Assignee:
Gemstar Development Corporation
International Classification:
H04N007/16
US Classification:
725/025000
Abstract:
A television control system automatically tunes a television set to receive and display a desired program telecast at a future time. This is done by keying in a PLUS CODE™ number defining the channel, time, day, and length (CTDL data) of the program or selecting the program from an on-screen program guide to capture the CTDL data from an EPG data base stored in memory. The CTDL data is stored in a stack memory until the time of the program. The microprocessor monitors the stack memory. The microprocessor tunes the television set to the channel on which the desired program is telecast and turns the television set on at the time of the desired program. If the television set is already on at the time of the desired program, the television set is not turned off at the conclusion of the desired program, i.e., it remains on. However, if the television set is off at the time of the desired program, the television set is turned off again at the conclusion of the desired program. This results in the television set not being left on when the residents are away from home while the scheduled tuning feature is being used.

Access To Internet Data Through A Television System

US Patent:
2004010, May 27, 2004
Filed:
Nov 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/718187
Inventors:
Douglas Macrae - Weston MA, US
Henry Yuen - Redondo Beach CA, US
Roy Mankovitz - Calabasas CA, US
Elsie Leung - South Pasadena CA, US
Daniel Kwoh - La Canada/Flintridge CA, US
Thomas Westberg - Sudbury MA, US
Assignee:
GEMSTAR DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
International Classification:
H04N007/173
G06F013/00
H04N005/445
G06F003/00
US Classification:
725/109000, 725/110000, 725/112000, 725/043000
Abstract:
A television system provides access to Internet data simultaneously with a displayed television program. Data units including data address sites available through a networked computer system such as the Internet are embedded in a television signal along with a television program. Information representing the data address site, such as an icon or descriptive text, is displayed simultaneously with the television program on the television. If the user selects the data address site, a data retrieval terminal in two-way communication with the network and associated with the television establishes a connection with the network and requests the data corresponding to the selected data address site. The retrieved information is then formatted for display.
