Howard Cohen - Palo Alto CA, US
Tal Lavian - Sunnyvale CA, US
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
G06F009/46
US Classification:
718100000
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for resource scheduling on a switched underlay network enables coordination, scheduling, and scheduling optimization to take place taking into account the availability of the data and the network resources comprising the switched underlay network. Requested transfers may be fulfilled by assessing the requested transfer parameters, the availability of the network resources required to fulfill the request, the availability of the data to be transferred, the availability of sufficient storage resources to receive the data, and other potentially conflicting requested transfers. In one embodiment, the requests are under-constrained to enable transfer scheduling optimization to occur. The under-constrained nature of the requests enables requests to be scheduled taking into account factors such as transfer priority, transfer duration, the amount of time it has been since the transfer request was submitted, and many other factors.

Variable Pulse Width Laser And Method Of Use

US Patent:
5269778, Dec 14, 1993
Filed:
Sep 26, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/765988
Inventors:
John L. Rink - San Francisco CA
Howard S. Cohen - Berkeley CA
International Classification:
A61N 506
US Classification:
606 12
Abstract:
A laser for medical includes an optically pumped laser medium, and the output of the laser is directed through an optical fiber delivery system to a tissue target. The flashlamp is driven by a pulsed power signal that is selectively variable to produce laser pulses of predetermined temporal width and pulse energy, and these values can be selected in accordance with the type of tissue being treated and the tissue effect desired. The laser may be operated to produce relatively brief pulses of high energy, which create a localized plasma at the surface of the target tissue. The plasma effect blocks any significant penetration of the laser beam into the tissue, and each laser pulse causes the ablation of a small portion of the tissue target. Thus thermal necrosis of adjacent and underlying tissue minimized. At the opposite extreme, the laser may be operated to produce relatively long pulses of low or moderate energy, so that the laser beam penetrates the tissue to create such effects as deep coagulation, deep thermal heating and necrosis, and the like.

Portable, Suspended Outdoor Shelter

US Patent:
4320542, Mar 23, 1982
Filed:
May 27, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/153745
Inventors:
Howard Cohen - Berkeley CA
International Classification:
A45F 106
A45F 322
US Classification:
5121
Abstract:
A portable, suspended outdoor shelter includes a base panel having a pair of stiffening members secured in a pair of sleeves disposed along opposed longitudinally extending sides of the base panel. A pair of reinforcing web members extend along and reinforce the sleeves, and extend substantially therebeyond to be secured to a pair of spaced apart support structures such as adjacent tree trunks or boughs. A plurality of resilient, linear tubular members are bent in inverted U configuration and are secured above and between the stiffening members to apply tension laterally to said base panel. End panels extend between the ends of the base panel and the lower portions of their respective reinforcing web members, with a window and a door disposed in the end panels. A canopy extends between the upper edges of the end panels, and is supported by the inverted U tubular members. The base and end panels and canopy define an enclosed shelter which is suspended above the ground between two trees or the like, and is secure from the elements, and ground-dwelling creatures.

Method And Apparatus For External Control Of Surgical Lasers

US Patent:
5154707, Oct 13, 1992
Filed:
Jul 26, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/557096
Inventors:
Dan L. Rink - Oakland CA
John L. Rink - San Francisco CA
Howard S. Cohen - Berkeley CA
International Classification:
A61N 506
US Classification:
606 12
Abstract:
A method and apparatus used in combination with an existing laser for controlling the temperature of a laser powered tool includes a temperature control device coupled between the output of the laser and the optical fiber delivery system to monitor the temperature of the optical fiber delivery system and attenuate the laser output power to achieve a desired temperature level. The device establishes a beam path and provides a beam deflector that is variably positioned in the beam path to deflect a variable portion of the laser beam toward a laser wavelength-absorbing heat sink. An infrared detector is directed to receive emissions from the laser tool, and electronic circuitry processes the signal from the infrared detector to determine the temperature in the delivery system and generate an actuator signal to position the beam deflector so that beam deflection is increased or decreased to achieve a predetermined, desirable temperature level in the delivery system. A photodetector is disposed to receive ambient light from the area near the laser operation, and a time discrimination circuit receives the photodetector signal to determine if laser radiation is escaping into the area. The system causes laser shutdown if laser light is present in the area, so that operating personnel may eliminate the use of laser safety eyewear.
