High-Speed Data Services Using Multiple Transmit Antennas

US Patent:
6370129, Apr 9, 2002
Filed:
Jun 5, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/587345
Inventors:
Howard Huang - New York NY
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies, Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04Q 700
US Classification:
370329, 370542
Abstract:
High-speed wireless data systems and methods are described for simultaneously supporting multiple data users, including flexible mixed-traffic services, using an illustrative CDMA architecture. Embodiments are compatible with current and third generation CDMA systems, while achieving spectral efficiencies that are in some cases an order of magnitude or more higher. Embodiments advantageously employ multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver and code spreading to realize multiple access systems. Some illustrative receiver embodiments advantageously employ a decorrelating detector, while others feature a decorrelating decision-feedback detector. In typical operation, each of a plurality of high-speed data streams directed to respective data users is demultiplexed into multiple (G 1) lower rate substreams, which are modulated by a CDMA spreading code and transmitted from M antennas at a base station. A receiver employs P antennas and multi-user detection to demodulate the G data substreams of its associated user. Performance measures for a variety of illustrative transmission and receiver configurations are derived using novel techniques for calculating system level capacities and spectral efficiencies (measured in bits per second per Hertz per sector).

Code Division Multiple Access Communication With Enhanced Multipath Diversity

US Patent:
6373832, Apr 16, 2002
Filed:
Jul 2, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/108775
Inventors:
Howard C. Huang - Hoboken NJ
Laurence Eugene Mailaender - Hoboken NJ
Giovanni Vannucci - Middletown Township Monmouth County NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04B 7216
US Classification:
370342, 375267, 455 69, 455101
Abstract:
A system, a transceiver, and methods for code division multiple access (CDMA) communication. The system includes first and second code division multiple access transceivers. The first code division multiple access transceiver has a plurality antennas disposed to provide transmission via a plurality of paths and the second code division multiple access transceiver has a rake arrangement for processing a plurality of signals received at the rake arrangement with differing delays or other characteristics. A driving arrangement is provided for causing the first code division multiple access transceiver to use a relative few, e. g. , one, of the plurality of antennas. When, however, an indication is obtained that an adequate number of resolvable signals are likely not received at the rake arrangement of the second transceiver, a circuit switches the driving arrangement to cause the first transceiver to use more of the plurality of antennas. In one implementation, the second transceiver sends a feedback signal indicating the number of useful signals being received and the first transceiver responds to the feedback signal by selecting and using a desirable number of transmit antennas. In an implementation suitable for a time-division duplexing (TDD) communication system, the first transceiver obtains the indication by inference from the fact that it is not receiving an adequate plurality of resolvable signals from the second transceiver.

Methods And Apparatus For Coherent Detection Of Signals With Orthogonal Data Modulation

US Patent:
6385185, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Jun 25, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/104791
Inventors:
Howard C. Huang - Hoboken NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04B 7216
US Classification:
370342
Abstract:
Coherent channels estimates are generated for received uplink mobile-to-base signals in a wireless CDMA system, or for other types of orthogonally-modulated signals in other multiaccess systems. The coherent channel estimates are used to implement signal detection functions such as maximal ratio combining (MRC), coherent detection and interference cancellation. In one embodiment, a matched filter bank provides a set of matched filter outputs for different combinations of data symbols, multipath components of a received signal, and base station receive antennas. The matched filter outputs are processed in a coherent channel estimator to generate a set of coherent channel estimates. The channel estimates may be generated directly from the matched filter outputs, or may be generated by processing the matched filter outputs using a decorrelating detector approach. The invention also provides improved interference cancellation techniques which can be implemented using any type of coherent channel estimates.

Pilot Signal Transmission In A Multi-Transmit Antenna Wireless Communication System

US Patent:
6870825, Mar 22, 2005
Filed:
Sep 6, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/655729
Inventors:
Howard C. Huang - New York NY, US
Achilles George Kogiantis - Madison NJ, US
Harish Viswanathan - Basking Ridge NJ, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill DE
International Classification:
H04B007/06
US Classification:
370342, 370209
Abstract:
Pilot signals transmitted by different antennas in a wireless communication system using multiple transmit antennas are distinguished using different codes. In one embodiment, each of two antennas simultaneously transmit a time slot's worth of data while time division multiplexing a pilot signal with the data. The pilot signal from the first antenna is encoded with a first code such as a Walsh code and the pilot signal from the second antenna is encoded with a different code such as a different Walsh code. The different codes enable a receiver to distinguish the pilot signals when they are received to enable coherent detection of signals transmitted by both of the antennas.

Inorganic/Block Copolymer-Dye Composites And Dye Doped Mesoporous Materials For Optical And Sensing Applications

US Patent:
6952436, Oct 4, 2005
Filed:
Nov 14, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/002968
Inventors:
Gernot Wirnsberger - Graz, AT
Brian J. Scott - Goleta CA, US
Howard C. Huang - Oakland Gardens NY, US
Nicholas A. Melosh - Pasadena CA, US
Peidong Yang - Berkeley CA, US
Bradley F. Chmelka - Goleta CA, US
Galen D. Stucky - Goleta CA, US
Assignee:
Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
H01S003/00
US Classification:
372 39
Abstract:
A method for preparing transparent mesostructured inorganic/block-copolymer composites or inorganic porous solids containing optically responsive species with selective optical, optoelectronic, and sensing properties resulting therefrom. Mesoscopically organized inorganic/block copolymer composites doped with dyes or complexes are prepared for use as optical hosts, chemical/physical/biological sensors, photochromic materials, optical waveguides, tunable solid-state lasers, or optoelectronic devices. Signal Detection By A Receiver In A Multiple Antenna Time-Dispersive System

US Patent:
7359466, Apr 15, 2008
Filed:
Aug 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/938453
Inventors:
Howard C Huang - New York NY, US
Laurence Eugene Mailaender - New York NY, US
Magnus Sandell - Swindon, GB
Harish Viswanathan - Basking Ridge NJ, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04B 1/10
US Classification:
375349, 375345, 375350, 375232
Abstract:
In a MIMO system the bit error rate floor caused by time dispersion is reduced by employing a joint minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer for all of the respective transmit antenna—receive antenna pairings that are possible in the MIMO system. The resulting joint equalization compensates not only for the impact of the channel on the transmit antenna—receive antenna pairings but also for the interference of the other transmit antennas on any given receive antenna. The joint equalization outperforms simply replicating the prior art minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer for each transmit antenna—receive antenna pairings.
