Connection Control Interface For Asynchronous Transfer Mode Switches

US Patent:
6434612, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Dec 10, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/988300
Inventors:
David A. Hughes - Mountain View CA
Isaac P. Choi - San Jose CA
Radhika Padmanabhan - San Jose CA
Neufito L. Fernandes - Cupertino CA
William P. Buckley - San Jose CA
Jeremy R Lawrence - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Cisco Technology, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
709223
Abstract:
A connection control interface for switches in a network is provided. The connection control interface allows the multiservice switch to provide a number of switch resource partitions to a number of independent controllers coupled to the switch. The switch resource partitions comprise a number of subsets of switch resources that define a number of independent subset networks of a physical network. The connection control interface allows the independent controllers to control the connections of the switch using the number of switch resource partitions. The independent controllers each use one of a number of control systems, the control systems comprising a network software level. The independent controllers comprise a virtual switch interface having a master component and a slave component where the master and slave components may be hosted on different processors. The slave components may be hosted on a control card that controls a number of port cards of the switch or on a port card processor. The switch and the independent controllers are resynchronized when discrepancies are detected between the connections on the switch and those expected by the each of the plurality of independent controllers.

Apparatus And Method Of Token Ring Beacon Station Removal For A Communication Network

US Patent:
5361250, Nov 1, 1994
Filed:
Nov 3, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/146948
Inventors:
Truong Q. Nguyen - San Jose CA
Isaac P. Choi - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Synoptics Communications, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H04L 1242
US Classification:
370 161
Abstract:
A network process that automatically identifies and isolates a faulty station or group of stations within a token ring communication network in a timely manner. The present invention performs three different and separate processing strategies to identify and isolate faulty stations and or groups of stations within a token ring communication network. The processing of the present invention is accomplished simultaneously within the network management modules of each concentrator within the overall communication network. Upon receipt of beacon signals indicating a faulty station in the network, the present invention directs the NMM to isolate newly inserted stations or modules. If this is not successful then the present invention attempts a direct removal process if port address association data is present. If no port address association data is present then a brute force process is performed to identify and isolate the station or module that is generating a communication fault within the token ring network.

Apparatus And Method For Discovering A Topology For Local Area Networks Connected Via Transparent Bridges

US Patent:
5734824, Mar 31, 1998
Filed:
Dec 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/758291
Inventors:
Isaac P. Choi - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Bay Networks, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
39520011
Abstract:
A system of discovering the active topology of the LANs (local area networks) connected via any apparent bridges that conform to the IEEE 802. 1D standard. A discovered active topology of the present invention consists of the active bridges, the LANs and the NMMs (network management modules) that constitute the bridged LAN. The system of the present invention advantageously utilizes the standard (IEEE 802. 1D) defined behaviors of transparent bridges to discover the active topology. In so doing, the present invention does not require the bridges to issue any special proprietary frames for development of the active topology. The IEEE 802. 1D conforming bridges have the property of forming a path between two conversing end stations. If the two end stations reside in adjacent LANs, the path between these two LANs only has the connecting bridge and no other LAN in between. The present invention utilizes this property in discovering the complete active topology of a bridged LAN via special communications between NMMs located on the LANs.
