Second Stage Turbine Bucket Airfoil

US Patent:
6685434, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
Sep 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/244562
Inventors:
David John Humanchuk - Simpsonville SC
Craig Allen Bielek - Simpsonville SC
Robert Alan Brittingham - Piedmont SC
James Tyson Balkcum - Taylors SC
Andrew Jones, Jr. - Greenville SC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F01D 514
US Classification:
416223A, 416DIG 2
Abstract:
The second stage buckets have airfoil profiles substantially in accordance with Cartesian coordinate values of X, Y and Z set forth Table I wherein X and Y values are in inches and the Z value is non-dimensional along the bucket centerline coincident with a turbine radius and convertible to a Z distance in inches from the turbine axis by multiplying the Z value by the height of the airfoil and adding the root radius to the result. The X and Y distances may be scalable as a function of the same constant or number to provide a scaled up or scaled down airfoil section for the bucket. The nominal airfoil given by the X, Y and Z distances lies within an envelop of Â0. 160 inches.

Backbone Support Structure For Compressor

US Patent:
5354174, Oct 11, 1994
Filed:
Nov 9, 1992
Appl. No.:
8/019801
Inventors:
James T. Balkcum - West Palm Beach FL
Jack W. Wilson - West Palm Beach FL
Assignee:
United Technologies Corporation - Hartford CT
International Classification:
F04D 2960
US Classification:
4152092
Abstract:
The backbone which is a load carrying support member of the aft end of the compressor of a gas turbine engine is fabricated from an annular disk-like element that is generally straight in cross section. The points of attachment permit circumferential thermal growth with radial restraint and snugness at judicious locations for minimizing scrubbing of the case-tied segmented inner stator case.

Compressor Case Construction With Backbone

US Patent:
5118253, Jun 2, 1992
Filed:
Sep 12, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/581227
Inventors:
James T. Balkcum - West Palm Beach FL
Assignee:
United Technologies Corporation - Hartford CT
International Classification:
F04D 2960
US Classification:
4152092
Abstract:
The after end of each of the segments of a segmented stator at the end of the compressor section of a gas turbine engine is supported to the full hoop outer case by an annular disk-like element that is generally straight in cross-section where each segment is joined to the disk-like element by a single bolt extending axially through a radial flange integrally formed on each of the segments and the bolt is located intermediate the ends of the flange and the flange fits into an annular groove formed in the end of the disk-like element permitting circumferential thermal growth with radial restraint.
