Flexible Polyurethane Foam Based On Mdi

US Patent:
4384050, May 17, 1983
Filed:
Oct 26, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/314554
Inventors:
James L. Guthrie - Ashton MD
Assignee:
W. R. Grace & Co. - New York NY
International Classification:
C08G 1814
C08G 1877
C08G 1832
US Classification:
521137
Abstract:
A flexible, hydrophobic polyurethane foam is produced by mixing together an aqueous phase which can optionally contain reinforcing fibers and surfactants and a resin phase comprising a prepolymer derived from a poly (oxy C. sub. 2-4 alkylene) diol having a molecular weight of at least about 1100, an MDI containing isocyanate product having a functionality greater than 2. 0 made of a mixture of MDI and isocyanate containing derivatives of MDI, and a monomeric polyol crosslinking agent having 3 or 4 hydroxyl equivalents per mole. The preferred polyol is trimethylolpropane and the diol is an equimolar mixture of Carbowax 1000 and Carbowax 1450. The diol and the polyol, such as trimethylolpropane, are present in a mole ratio in the range of 4:1 to 8:1 while the ratio of the isocyanate equivalents to the total hydroxyl equivalents is in the range of 2. 5:1 to 3. 5:1. The isocyanate containing product comprises less than 50% by weight of the prepolymer and Isonate 143L is the preferred isocyanate product. Flexible foams are obtained which are water-absorbing for medical or personal care applications.

Simulated Natural Sponge Based On Hydrophilic Polyurethane

US Patent:
4160076, Jul 3, 1979
Filed:
Jul 15, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/816055
Inventors:
James L. Guthrie - Ashton MD
Donald J. Bach - Baltimore MD
Assignee:
W. R. Grace & Co. - New York NY
International Classification:
C08G 1814
C08G 1810
C08G 1848
US Classification:
521159
Abstract:
The invention disclosed is for new improved hydrophilic crosslinked polyurethane foams which simulate natural sponges and prepared by reacting an isocyanate capped polyoxyethylene polyol reactant with an aqueous reactant and a carefully balanced combination of a nonionic surface-active agent and a liquid defoaming agent. The resultant foams are characterized by a majority of large size cells and membranes which themselves are foamed with small cells.

Welding Sealants For Metals And Method Of Use

Thiol Containing Compounds And Their Preparation

US Patent:
4061864, Dec 6, 1977
Filed:
Jan 26, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/652239
Inventors:
James Leverette Guthrie - Ashton MD
Shrikant Vishwanath Dighe - Bethesda MD
Assignee:
W. R. Grace & Co. - New York NY
International Classification:
C07C101447
US Classification:
560 26
Abstract:
This invention is directed to thiol containing compounds having no hydrolytically sensitive groupings which are useful as polymerization transfer agents or as curing agents in curable polymer systems containing polyenes and a free radical initiator. The thiol containing compounds are formed by reacting a polyol with an allylic halide to form a poly(unsaturated ether) whose double bonds are converted to thioesters by free radical catalyzed addition of SH groups from a thiolcarboxylic acid, e. g. thioacetic acid and the like. Hydrolysis of the thioester yields the desired thiol or polythiol derivative. Alternatively the poly(unsaturated ether) is reacted with H. sub. 2 S to give the desired thiol or polythiol directly in a single step. The polythiols can be chain extended by any difunctional compound that reacts with the hydroxy groups on the polythiol.
