Apparatus And Method For Transmitting A Ds3 Signal Over Multiple Twisted Pair Conductors

US Patent:
7738511, Jun 15, 2010
Filed:
Jul 11, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/617363
Inventors:
Zhangyi Wu - Rockville MD, US
Gary Michael Miller - Kearneysville WV, US
James Edward Sclater - Annandale VA, US
Filiz Taskin - Istanbul, TR
David Owen Corp - Clifton VA, US
Assignee:
Hubbell Incorporated - Orange CT
International Classification:
H04J 3/04
US Classification:
370536, 370535, 370249
Abstract:
A system and method for transmitting DS3 signals over long distances over a plurality of twisted pair conductors is provided. A DS3 interface is provided. The DS3 signal is inversely multiplexed into a plurality of data streams. Overhead is added to the data streams to generate packets having stream identifiers and packet number identifiers. At the receive end, received packets are synchronized using the stream and packet number identifiers, and multiplexed back into a DS3 signal. Systems according to embodiments of the invention are compatible with existing loopback codes, passing through a first loopback code received, and optionally entering a loopback mode where more than one loopback code is received consecutively without an intervening loop down code being received. The incorporated technology permits very small packaging and thereby permits use in small outdoor enclosures. Connection interfaces adapt automatically to the application and provide further conveniences for use in telephone company outdoor cabinets.

System And Method For Automatic Gain And Slope Equalization Provisioning Of Telephone Transmission Lines

US Patent:
2003003, Feb 20, 2003
Filed:
Aug 14, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/928440
Inventors:
James Sclater - Annandale VA, US
William Miller - South Riding VA, US
International Classification:
H04M001/00
H04M003/00
H04M007/00
US Classification:
379/347000
Abstract:
A system and method for automatic gain and slope equalization for provisioning telephone circuits is provided. A first unit is installed at the company end of a copper pair transmission line. A second unit is installed between customer premises equipment (CPE) and the copper pair transmission line. The second unit is programmed to disconnect the CPE, and to transmit a test signal, preferably comprising a square wave with a known amplitude and fundamental frequency of 1 kHz. The signal is received at the first unit, and the fundamental frequency and odd harmonic frequencies are analyzed. Based on the analysis, the first unit thereafter compensates for impairments in the transmission line. The test procedure can be initiated from either the first unit or the second unit. The first unit is programmed to produce a command sequence, preferably comprising a series of DC voltages applied to the tip and ring leads, and received at the second unit. The second unit is programmed to recognize the series of DC voltages and begin transmitting the test signal. The second unit is preferably able to signal the first unit to begin a test sequence by drawing a DC current through the tip and ring leads for a predetermined period of time, which is recognized by the first unit. The second unit is further adapted to be a passive device, and to have an energy storage device to provide power to the unit during transmission of the command sequence.

Method And Apparatus For Powering A Ds3 Device

US Patent:
2006009, May 4, 2006
Filed:
Feb 10, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/054602
Inventors:
James Sclater - Annandale VA, US
David Corp - Clifton VA, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
US Classification:
370421000
Abstract:
Disclosed are a central office module and a remote terminal module for span powering a variety of high speed DS3 and higher-bandwidth communication modules that require sufficiently little power so as to permit their powering over as many as four telephone wires of at least one mile in length. The up to four twisted pairs only provide power between the central office, remote terminal, controlled environment vault, hut or similar location including the telephone room or closet at a large remote site and remote terminal.
