Method And Apparatus For Capture And Sequester Of Carbon Dioxide And Extraction Of Energy From Large Land Masses During And After Extraction Of Hydrocarbon Fuels Or Contaminants Using Energy And Critical Fluids

US Patent:
7562708, Jul 21, 2009
Filed:
Apr 12, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/786474
Inventors:
John A. Cogliandro - Dedham MA, US
John M. Moses - Dedham MA, US
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Waltham MA
International Classification:
E21B 43/24
E21B 43/40
US Classification:
166248, 166266, 166267, 16625001, 1662721, 1662723, 166302
Abstract:
A closed loop system for increasing yield, reducing post process pollution, reducing energy consumed during and after extraction of fuels or contaminants in formations and for sequestering of carbon dioxide C0from various sources is converted to a critical fluid for use as a flushing and cooling medium. Electrical energy heats a hydrocarbon rich formation resulting in the extraction of hot fluids which are fed to heat exchangers, gas/liquid separator, and steam turbine whereby oil, electric power, carbon dioxide and methane are produced for reuse in the system or for external use. Further, a method for sequestering of carbon dioxide in a formation comprises the steps of injecting COinto the reservoir, flushing with cool pressurized COfor heat removal, infiltrating with ultra-fine low density suspended catalyst particles of dry sodium hydroxide in CO, pumping water moistened COinto the reservoir to activate the catalysts, binding the COwith reacting materials and capping the reservoir.

Method Of Forming Particles Using A Supercritical Fluid

US Patent:
5864923, Feb 2, 1999
Filed:
Aug 26, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/920287
Inventors:
Stephane Fabrice Rouanet - Hyde Park MA
William Edward McGovern - Duxbury MA
Wanqing Cao - Alameda CA
John M. Moses - Dedham MA
Angel L. Carrillo - Wellesley MA
Irving M. Klotz - Evanston IL
Assignee:
CF Technologies, Inc. - Hyde Park MA
The Gillette Company - Boston MA
International Classification:
B01D 900
B01D 1700
C07C 710
US Classification:
23295R
Abstract:
A method for providing aerogels, and aerogels produced according to the method, is described. As one aspect, antiperspirant compounds that are in aerogel form, and antiperspirant and deodorant compositions including such salts, are described. The method involves contacting a solution containing material to be processed with a species selected to precipitate the material and selected so as to be miscible with the solvent system of the solution. After the material is precipitated, the material may be washed with the precipitating species until it is substantially free of solvent system. Then, the precipitating species containing the material precipitate is taken above its critical point, and the supercritical fluid is exhausted above its critical temperature. Alternately, a separate isolating species is introduced to displace the precipitating species, or the precipitating species/solvent system mixture. The isolating species then is taken above its critical point, and exhausted above its critical temperature.

Liquid Co.sub.2 /Cosolvent Extraction

US Patent:
4877530, Oct 31, 1989
Filed:
Feb 29, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/161999
Inventors:
John M. Moses - Dedham MA
Assignee:
CF Systems Corporation - Waltham MA
International Classification:
B01D 1104
US Classification:
210511
Abstract:
Disclosed are a fluid extractant, and a process and apparatus for using the extractant to separate an organic liquid from an aqueous mixture. The extractant comprises a first fluid solvent which is a gas in its near-critical or supercritical state and a cosolvent. A preferred first fluid solvent is near-critical liquid carbon dioxide. Preferred cosolvents are 2-ethyl hexanol for ethanol extraction, and hexanoic acid for acetic acid extraction. Organic compounds such as monohydric alcohols, monoacids, ketones, ethers, aldehydes and esters can be recovered from dilute aqueous solutions more economically than possible by prior art processes of distillation.

Systems and methods for selectively recovering a target metal from an ion exchange resin are generally described. In certain embodiments, such methods and systems can be employed for metal purification and enrichment of target metal species from mixtures containing contaminating or non-target metals. In some embodiments, ion exchange is accomplished in the presence of one or more species that facilitate the recovery of a metal from a composition further comprising one or more other metals. The recovered metal-containing composition may contain the recovered metal at relatively high purity and/or in relatively large amounts. In some embodiments, the conditions present during ion exchange are varied in a manner that facilitates the enrichment of a metal from an initial (e.g. sample) composition further comprising one or more other metals to result in a product that contains the enriched metal at relatively high purity and/or in relatively large amounts

Systems And Methods For Separating Cannabis-Derived Compounds Using Chromatography With Liquid Or Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

US Patent:
2020024, Aug 6, 2020
Filed:
Aug 7, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/637256
Inventors:
- Cambridge MA, US
John M. Moses - Milton MA, US
Veronica M. Wilson - Ann Arbor MI, US
William H. Dalzell - Marshfield MA, US
Tony J. Elian - San Mateo CA, US
Truong H. Cai - Providence RI, US
John MacKay - Whitinsville MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
C07D 311/80
C07D 311/78
C07C 37/00
Abstract:
Chromatography systems and methods for using carbon dioxide to separate one or more cannabis-derived compounds from other components of a mixture are generally described. Some of the methods described herein comprise transporting a mixture comprising a first cannabis-derived compound and one or more other components through a chromatography column containing a stationary phase comprising a packing material. In some embodiments, the mixture is transported through the column within a mobile phase that comprises carbon dioxide (e.g., supercritical CO, liquid CO). The mobile phase may be substantially free of a co-solvent that is in liquid phase at standard room temperature and pressure. In some embodiments, the mobile phase is free of any co-solvent and comprises 100 vol % carbon dioxide. The first cannabis-derived compound may interact with the stationary phase and/or the mobile phase to a different degree than the one or more other components of the mixture, causing at least partial separation of the first cannabis-derived compound from the one or more other components within the column. Due to this separation, at least one fraction of the mobile phase that comprises the first cannabis-derived compound and is substantially free of the one or more other components of the mixture may be collected.
