Congestion And Throughput Visibility And Isolation

US Patent:
7042880, May 9, 2006
Filed:
Oct 16, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/688213
Inventors:
Eric A. Voit - Bethesda MD, US
Robert T. Baum - Gaithersburg MD, US
Jeffrey Ian Winter - Silver Spring MD, US
Assignee:
Verizon Services Corp. - Arlington VA
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
US Classification:
3703951, 3703955
Abstract:
Offering vertical services to subscribers and service providers is an avenue to immediately improve the competitiveness of digital subscriber line access service, for example of the type offered by a local exchange carrier. To deliver high-quality vertical services, however, the underlying ADSL Data Network (ADN) or the like needs to establish Quality of Service (QoS) as a core characteristic and offer an efficient mechanism for insertion of the vertical services. The inventive network architecture introduces QoS into the ADN, in a manner that enables the delivery of sophisticated and demanding IP-based services to subscribers, does not affect existing Internet tiers of service, and is cost-effective in terms of initial costs, build-out, and ongoing operations. The architecture utilizes a switch capable of examining and selectively forwarding packets or frames based on higher layer information in the protocol stack, that is to say on information that is encapsulated in the layer-2 information utilized to define normal connectivity through the network. The switch enables segregation of upstream traffic by type and downstream aggregation of Internet traffic together with traffic from a local services domain for vertical services and other local services.

Rf-Based Dynamic Remote Control Device Based On Generating And Sensing Of Electrical Field In Vicinity Of The Operator

US Patent:
2007017, Aug 2, 2007
Filed:
Feb 1, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/700863
Inventors:
Robert Baum - Gaithersburg MD, US
James Curry - Wake Forest NC, US
Jeffrey Winter - Rockville MD, US
International Classification:
G10H 1/02
US Classification:
084737000
Abstract:
Circuitry in a wireless remote control apparatus applies a signal to a sensor plate of the device and detects the field, e.g. to sense a parameter related to the field that is responsive to relative position of a part of the body of the operator. In the example, the field generation and sensing are performed during a first time slice. During a second time slice, a reference voltage is applied to the plate, and a transmitter sends a signal via an antenna representing the sensed field state. During the first time slice, however, there is no transmission from the antenna, and the antenna functions as a shield with respect to a lead connecting the circuitry to the plate. The antenna comprises a coaxial conductor around a portion of the electrical lead, and a dielectric material separates the electrical lead and the antenna. The example takes the form of a ring.

Sensed Condition Responsive Wireless Remote Control Device Using Inter-Message Duration To Indicate Sensor Reading

US Patent:
2007018, Aug 9, 2007
Filed:
Feb 1, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/700935
Inventors:
Robert Thomas Baum - Gaithersburg MD, US
James Edward Curry - Wake Forest NC, US
Jeffrey Ian Winter - Rockville MD, US
International Classification:
G08B 1/08
US Classification:
34053911, 34053922
Abstract:
A disclosed wireless remote control apparatus includes a sensor, such as a capacitive sensing plate, and measurement circuitry coupled to the sensor. The measurement circuitry takes real time measurements of an electrical parameter from the sensor. The parameter, such as a capacitance or charge on the plate that relates to an electrical field in the vicinity of the sensor, represents a detection of position or movement of a member within a substantially continuous range in proximity to the sensor. In an example of a ring embodiment of the remote control device, the sensor detects position and/or movements in relation to the operator's finger. The remote control apparatus includes a wireless transmitter for wireless transmission of encoded messages and a controller. The controller controls the transmitter, to set durations of intervals between the message transmissions as a function of the measurements of the electrical parameter.

Congestion And Thru-Put Visibility And Isolation

US Patent:
2011006, Mar 24, 2011
Filed:
Sep 17, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/884935
Inventors:
Eric A. Voit - Bethesda MD, US
Robert T. Baum - Gaithersburg MD, US
Jeffrey Ian Winter - Silver Spring MD, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/26
US Classification:
370248, 370241, 370252
Systems coupled to the local services domain alone or in combination with software in servers and/or a user's computer enable a testing of connectivity, throughput, QoS metrics and the like through selected points of the ADN network.
