Angioplasty Catheter System With Adjustable Balloon Length

US Patent:
6527741, Mar 4, 2003
Filed:
Dec 21, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/469966
Inventors:
Jeong S. Lee - Diamond Bar CA
Florencia Lim - Union City CA
Cheryl Stiger - San Diego CA
Carolyn Voyles - Escondido CA
Vincent Bavaro - Temecula CA
Assignee:
Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 2900
US Classification:
60410306, 604509, 606194, 264529
Abstract:
A resizable inflatable balloon, primarily for use with balloon catheters. The resizable inflatable balloon comprises a first portion and an adjacent second portion. The first portion is inflatable to a working diameter at a first pressure while the second portion does not substantially expand at the first pressure. The second portion does expand to the working diameter at a second pressure greater than the first pressure, so that subsequent inflation at the first pressure inflates the first portion and the second portion to the working diameter. The methods of resizing the inflatable members include placing the inflatable balloon in a mold and supplying inflation fluid to expand the second member to the working diameter. In practice, a catheter having the resizable inflatable balloon is guided through a patients vasculature until the inflatable balloon is positioned in a desired region. Inflation fluid is supplied at the first pressure to inflate the first portion to the working diameter.

Catheter Member With Bondable Layer

Inventors:
Jeong Soo Lee - Diamond Bar CA
Kenneth L. Wantink - Temecula CA
Alan A. Tannier - Temecula CA
Stephen J. Tiernan - Palo Alto CA
Assignee:
Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 2900
US Classification:
606194, 606191
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a catheter formed at least in part of a multilayered member having a first layer which is fusion bondable to another catheter component such as the skirt of an inflatable balloon and a second layer which is adjacent the first layer having a melting point greater than the first layer so that the multilayered member of the catheter is not deformed when the other catheter component is fusion bonded to the first layer of the multilayered member. The second layer is preferably lubricious in nature. In one embodiment of the invention, the multilayered member is a tubular element with the lubricious second layer defining an inner lumen extending within the tubular element. The outer layer of the tubular member may extend beyond the distal end of the inner layer and form a non-traumatic distal tip. Alternatively, a flexible non-traumatic distal tip may be fusion bonded to at least the outer layer of the multilayered tubular member.

Method Of Making A Catheter Balloon

US Patent:
6712833, Mar 30, 2004
Filed:
Aug 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/935449
Inventors:
Jeong S. Lee - Diamond Bar CA
Jose A. Romero - Perris CA
Roseminda J. White - Wildomar CA
Assignee:
Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 2900
US Classification:
606194, 606191
Abstract:
A method of forming a catheter component, such as a balloon, in which the component has a thinned skirt section formed by expanding tubing to a radially enlarged outer diameter and then decreasing the inner diameter and the outer diameter of the radially enlarged skirt section before or during bonding of the skirt section to the catheter shaft. The method generally includes blow molding tubing in a balloon mold having a skirt portion with an inner diameter which is larger than an outer diameter of the thinned skirt section of the balloon, so that the balloon mold produces a balloon having a radially enlarged skirt section with a larger outer diameter than is desired for the finished balloon. By then decreasing the diameter of the radially enlarged skirt section, the resulting skirt section is thinned, to provide a balloon catheter having improved flexibility and low profile.
