Abstract:
A system and process for streaming delivery of dynamically scalable media content over a network, such as, for example, the Internet or a wireless network, while automatically accounting for both fluctuating network bandwidth and packet loss. A system of rate-distortion based packet selection and organization is used to maximize the quality of streamed media files that have been encoded using any conventional scalable encoder. Media file quality is maximized for available bandwidth by scoring packets comprising encoded media files based on their contribution to the quality of a reconstructed media file, then preferentially transmitting those packets having the highest scores. In addition, where packets are lost during transmission, those packets that will provide the maximum rate-distortion decrease, are preferentially retransmitted prior to other lost packets which, if transmitted in the same time slot, would provide a lesser rate-distortion decrease.

Abstract:
The embedded audio coder (EAC) is a fully scalable psychoacoustic audio coder which uses a novel perceptual audio coding approach termed “implicit auditory masking” which is intermixed with a scalable entropy coding process. When encoding and decoding an audio file using the EAC, auditory masking thresholds are not sent to a decoder. Instead, the masking thresholds are automatically derived from already coded coefficients. Furthermore, in one embodiment, rather than quantizing the audio coefficients according to the auditory masking thresholds, the masking thresholds are used to control the order that the coefficients are encoded. In particular, in this embodiment, during the scalable coding, larger audio coefficients are encoded first, as the larger components are the coefficients that contribute most to the audio energy level and lead to a higher auditory masking threshold.

A “PeerStreamer” provides receiver-driven peer-to-peer (P2P) media streaming for loosely coupled P2P networks. Peers in the network perform only simple operations, may cache all or part of the streaming media, do not collaborate with other peers, may be unreliable, and may drop offline or come online during any given streaming session. Clients in the network operate in real-time to coordinate peers, stream media from multiple peers, perform load balancing, handle online/offline states of peers, and perform decoding and rendering the streaming media. In one embodiment, the PeerStreamer uses high rate erasure resilient coding to allow multiple serving peers to hold partial media without conflict, such that clients simply retrieve fixed numbers of erasure coded blocks regardless of where and what specific blocks are retrieved. In another embodiment, the PeerStreamer uses embedded coded media to vary streaming bitrates according to available serving bandwidths and client queue status.

A system and method for encoding and/or decoding a signal, such as an audio signal, employing a reversible transform obtained via matrix lifting. This reversible transform not only converts integer input to integer output, but also reconstructs the exact input from the output. A high-rate Reed-Solomon erasure resilient codes (ERC) system and method for generating and implementing Reed-Solomon erasure-resilient codes for use in high-rate applications. High-rate applications are applications where the number of coded messages is significantly higher (such as an order of magnitude) than the number of original messages. The Reed-Solomon ERC system uses a scalar vector multiplication and addition technique and a direct inversion technique. The direct inversion technique uses specific generator matrices, including a modified Vandermonde Matrix and a Cauchy Matrix, to directly calculate an inverse of the sub-generator matrix of receiving ERC-coded messages. The scalar vector multiplication and addition technique generates high-rate Reed-Solomon codes and performs scalar vector multiplication and addition on the Galois Field for the Reed-Solomon erasure encoding/decoding operations. In effect, the Reed-Solomon codes are “tuned” for use in the high-rate environment.

A serverless peer-to-peer (P2P) multi-party real-time audio communication system and method in which each of the peers takes a turn mixing and compressing the audio and redelivering the compressed audio. An input audio stream is divided or split into frames. At each frame, one peer node is selected to mix and redeliver the audio to the remainder of the peers in the network. The number of frames mixed and redelivered by a certain peer is proportional to its available resources (such as the upload bandwidth or computational power). The P2P audio communication system and method flexibly balances the load of the peers, such that peers having more resources are able to assist peers having fewer resources. This enables the P2P audio communication system and method to conduct a multi-party audio communication session without the need for powerful servers or peers.

A “seamless multiplexer,” as described herein, provides a flexible and efficient system and method for multiplexing embedded coded bitstreams. Further, unlike the conventional JPEG 2000 standard, the seamless multiplexer is capable of decoding multiplexed encoded bitstreams without the need to use a demultiplexing aide as overhead in the encoded signal. In general, the seamless multiplexer provides a novel approach for multiplexing code block bitstreams by using a “decoder pointer,” for multiplexing multiple embedded bitstreams without the use of a demultiplexing aide. Consequently, the seamless multiplexer not only reduces any multiplexing overhead, but also allows much smaller granularity of access in reshaping the compressed input signal. In addition, in one embodiment, the seamless multiplexer also uses dependencies between coefficient blocks to further improve overall compression efficiency.
