High Speed Harvester Cutting Chain

US Patent:
6374716, Apr 23, 2002
Filed:
Feb 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/514986
Inventors:
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Michael J. Patterson - Vancouver WA
Arvin A. Hille - West Linn OR
Assignee:
Blount, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B27B 3314
US Classification:
83833, 83834, 83830, 83839
Abstract:
A high speed harvester cutting chain has increased cutter height to provide an increased space for removal of the cut material from the saw kerf. The increased height of the cutter links eliminates the compacting of the material cut away by the cutter links between the saw chain and the base of the saw kerf. The foot of the cutter links are flared outward to contact the guide bar rails at a different position than the tie straps to increase the wear life of the guide bar and saw chain.

Automatically Sharpenable Saw Chain

US Patent:
6435070, Aug 20, 2002
Filed:
Mar 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/815184
Inventors:
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Assignee:
Blount, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B26D 146
US Classification:
83834, 83830
Abstract:
A saw chain formed in part from planar cutting link blanks including a cutter portion having a top edge surface and a side surface that intersect to form a line edge. A leading portion of the cutting link blank is twisted out of the plane of the blank so that the line edge becomes the cutting edge of the cutter and extends from the plane of the body to encompass the width of one side of the saw chain. Alternating cutting link are formed to have oppositely extended cutting edges to encompass the width of the saw chain. The cutting links preferably form certain of the center links of an assembled saw chain.

Method And Apparatus For Controlling Saw Chain Tension

US Patent:
5144751, Sep 8, 1992
Filed:
Aug 9, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/742902
Inventors:
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Assignee:
Blount, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B23D 5702
US Classification:
30386
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for manually applying a selected fit of a saw chain loop to a chain saw. A tensioning procedure is performed simply by loosening a guide bar hold-down screw. The loosened guide bar is slightly spaced away from the mounting plate of the chain saw as a spring extends the guide bar relative to a drive sprocket which tightens the saw chain. The hold-down screw, which has an inclined axis, is then tightened to force the saw bar obliquely toward the mounting plate, simultaneously forcing the guide bar in a longitudinal direction that backs off the saw chain tension by a predetermined amount.

Cutting Chain For Aggregate Materials

US Patent:
4971022, Nov 20, 1990
Filed:
Apr 23, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/512841
Inventors:
Lewis A. Scott - Lake Oswego OR
John L. Edgerton - Canby OR
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Assignee:
Blount, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B28D 108
B28D 112
US Classification:
125 21
Abstract:
A cutting saw chain for aggregate materials including a loop of articulated chain links adapted to fit the guide bar of a chain saw. The guide bar is provided with a flushing system whereby pressurized water is directed through the bar and into the path of the guided saw chain to cool the chain and flush away debris formed in the cutting operation. The cutting link structure is a folded plate-like member formed into spaced side plate portions and an overhead connecting web. The side plate portions function like side links in a conventional saw chain and ride on the rails of the guide bar. Rivet holes are formed in the side plate portions. Rivets projected through the rivet holes connect the side plate portions to front and rear center links. The side plate portions are fixed in spaced relation by the connecting web an permits the use of rivets with straight shank. The connecting web supports front and rear sections of a cutting block.

Cutting Chain

US Patent:
4827821, May 9, 1989
Filed:
Nov 10, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/928835
Inventors:
Lewis A. Scott - Lake Oswego OR
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Assignee:
Omark Industries, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B27B 3314
US Classification:
83831
Abstract:
A lightweight disposable cutting chain for use with small, compact power supplies comprises in one embodiment a series of links formed of wire. On certain links an end of the wire loop forming the link is cut to form a sharp edge capable of shaving material, such as wood, being cut. The links are arranged so that a narrow kerf is first cut by the links, other links being formed with cutting edges to shave material and widen the kerf. In other embodiments some or all of the links comprise metal plates formed by stamping from sheet metal.

Chain Tensioner For Chain Saw

US Patent:
5896670, Apr 27, 1999
Filed:
Jul 24, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/900231
Inventors:
Duane M. Gibson - Milwaukie OR
Arvin A. Hille - West Linn OR
Kent L. Huntington - Molalla OR
Johann Weber - Estacada OR
Assignee:
Blount, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
B27B 1714
US Classification:
30386
Abstract:
A chain tensioner for a chain saw has a cam member in positive engagement with a flange of a plate attached to the guide bar. Rotation of the cam member forces the guide bar away from a drive sprocket of the chain saw to tension the chain. The cam member is clamped in position to maintain the guide bar in the adjusted position. Flats on the cam member in abutment with the flange resist rotation of the cam member when in the adjusted and clamped position. A slot is provided in the cam member to facilitate rotating the cam to force the guide bar away from the drive sprocket.
