Signal Overload Protection Circuit For Varactor Tuner

US Patent:
3983490, Sep 28, 1976
Filed:
Aug 5, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/602172
Inventors:
John Y. Ma - Glenview IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04B 118
US Classification:
325452
Abstract:
An abrupt junction type varactor diode television tuner includes a source of DC tuning voltage supplying bias to the diodes for tuning the tuner to broadcast television signals. The varactor diode in the RF amplifier stage is connected to the source of tuning voltage through a very large resistance which provides automatic signal overload protection.

All Electronic Digital Tuner System With Memory

US Patent:
3946319, Mar 23, 1976
Filed:
May 3, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/466579
Inventors:
John Ma - Glenview IL
Akio Tanaka - Evanston IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04B 116
US Classification:
325459
Abstract:
An all-electronic television tuning system has a sequentially accessible multi-position two digit memory coupled to a viewer controlled channel number selection means for providing storage and recall of selected two digit channel numbers in a sequence established by loading selected channel numbers into fifteen of sixteen serial memory locations. The system has program and operate modes, corresponding respectively to storage and recall of channel number information, and the memory has a sixteenth, particular location accessible only in the operate mode for providing immediate all channel tuning control for the viewer irrespective of the pre-programmed channel number sequence.

Television Tuning System With Precision Substrate Switch Assembly

US Patent:
3965427, Jun 22, 1976
Filed:
Sep 3, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/502482
Inventors:
John Y. Ma - Glenview IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H03J 502
US Classification:
325464
Abstract:
A VHF television tuner system has four tunable circuits each including an abrupt junction varactor diode having a predictable capacitance-tuning voltage characteristic. The VHF frequency spectrum is divided into Lo and Hi bands encompassing television channels 2-6 and 7-13, respectively. A pair of voltage divider networks comprising precisely trimmed resistive material on a ceramic substrate provide tuning voltage terminals corresponding to the VHF television channels. The end terminals of each divider network are coupled to adjustable potentiometers for setting the tuning voltage at each extreme of the voltage divider. A substrate mounted switch accesses the tuning voltage points, supplies bandswitching voltages and provides AFC defeat between channels.

Television Receiver With Tuner Capable Of Receiving Air And Catv Signals

US Patent:
4002986, Jan 11, 1977
Filed:
Mar 27, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/562534
Inventors:
John Y. Ma - Glenview IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04B 116
US Classification:
325459
Abstract:
A television receiver having a varactor diode tuned VHF tuner is operable with airborne and cable-connected signals. Bandswitch-controlled diodes change the values of inductive reactance in the tuner stages so the varactor diodes can tune to signals in the VHF Lo and Hi bands and CATV Mid and Super bands. Automatic bandswitching circuitry is included to enable reception of VHF channels 2-13 and UHF channels when operating in the air signal mode and VHF channels 2-13 and CATV Mid (A--I) and Super band (J--Z) channels when operating in the cable signal mode.

Up-Down Frequency Converter For Cable T.v.

US Patent:
4352209, Sep 28, 1982
Filed:
Mar 23, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/242908
Inventors:
John Ma - Glenview IL
International Classification:
H04B 126
US Classification:
455315
Abstract:
A cable television up-down tuner includes a first frequency up conversion stage in which a first local oscillator, tunable over a wide frequency range, is coupled to a ring diode mixer having individual biasing networks in series with each diode. A combination high pass and low pass filter provides a bandwidth coupling of input signals to the mixer. An intermediate frequency amplifier couples the up converted signal to a second mixer. A fixed tuned second local oscillator down converts the intermediate frequency signal to a selected television channel frequency. The first local oscillator includes a printed circuit board transmission line resonator which is tuned by a varactor diode. The two local oscillators are positioned adjacent the corners of a quadrilateral housing and are isolated from each other by three wall-type shields.

Abrupt Junction Varactor Diode Television Tuner

US Patent:
3962643, Jun 8, 1976
Filed:
Aug 5, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/494449
Inventors:
John Y. Ma - Glenview IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04B 106
US Classification:
325464
Abstract:
A VHF television tuner has four tunable circuits each including an abrupt junction varacto diode having a predictable capacitance tuning voltage characteristic. The VHF frequency spectrum is divided into Lo and Hi bands encompassing television channels 2-14 6 and 7-14 13, respectively. A substrate mounted switch accesses the tuning voltage poins, supplies bandswitching voltages and provides AFC defeat between channels.

Television Receiver Automatic Frequency Control System

US Patent:
4015075, Mar 29, 1977
Filed:
Oct 2, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/619084
Inventors:
John Y. Ma - Glenview IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04N 560
US Classification:
358158
Abstract:
A television receiver includes a tuner, IF amplifier, video and audio processing circuitry and deflection circuits. Two quadrature detectors are driven from the IF amplifier, one tuned to the sound IF carrier frequency and the other tuned to the picture IF carrier frequency. A combining circuit accepts only negative-going error voltages from the first detector and only positive-going error voltages from the second detector to produce an AFC with a response curve defined by the sound IF frequency at one end and the picture IF frequency at the other end. The output of the combining circuit supplies a voltage controllable oscillator in the tuner.

Digital Signal Seeking Tuning System

US Patent:
3931579, Jan 6, 1976
Filed:
Apr 1, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/457010
Inventors:
John Ma - Glenview IL
Akio Tanaka - Evanston IL
Assignee:
Zenith Radio Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04B 134
US Classification:
325464
Abstract:
A signal recognizing television tuning system employing a varactor tuner and a channel number computer for supplying derived channel numbers and intrachannel fractions, based upon the local oscillator frequency, to a comparator which controls a ramp voltage source for the varactor tuner. A digital counter supplies a selected channel number to the comparator and the ramp voltage is changed until (1) equality exists between both derived and selected channel numbers and (2) the intrachannel fraction is within predetermined limits such that the system is tuned to receive only signals falling within a restricted frequency range. If no signal is recognized, the counter supplies a next adjacent channel number to the comparator. Signal recognition means stop further operation of the counter upon recognition of a signal within the restricted frequency range.
