Method For Preparing Camera-Ready Photostatic Copies Printed By Raster Printers For Use In The Publishing Industry

US Patent:
4964070, Oct 16, 1990
Filed:
May 5, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/190348
Inventors:
Jay Markoff - San Diego CA
John R. Deubert - La Jolla CA
Assignee:
Vital LaserType, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G06F 312
US Classification:
364523
Abstract:
A method for increasing optical fidelity of conventional laser printers by intercepting a page description word processing output file to be sent to a printer, expanding the text in that file, rotating the expanded text, and causing the expanded, rotated text to be printed along the length of multiple sheets, along with registration marks, for later assembly into an enlarged version for photo-reduction.

System Of Operating An Automatic Plotter Using Different Size Marking Devices

US Patent:
5058039, Oct 15, 1991
Filed:
Aug 18, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/395745
Inventors:
Jay Markoff - San Diego CA
John R. Deubert - La Jolla CA
International Classification:
G06K 1500
US Classification:
364520
Abstract:
A system and method of applying marking fluid using plotter driven marking instruments for drawing images onto a large sheet in a minimal amount of strokes with the aid of a computer. The system includes providing the computer with data defining the desired images, and providing a preselected plurality of marking instruments having different diameter tips and stroke widths. The computer is also provided with data corresponding to and representing the stroke width for each of the preselected plurality of different diameter tip marking instruments. The computer calculates the coordinates which each instrument is to fill in on the sheet. This is based upon the size, shape, and location of the image as compared to available stroke widths. The computer provides control signals to the plotter for controllably selecting and causing each different diameter tip marking instrument to fill in the sheet at locations according to the calculated stroke coordinates. The availability of a plurality of different size tips allows the computer to instruct the plotter to fill in the image with a minimal number of strokes to reduce the completion time and wear on the plotter.

Method And Apparatus For Generating Aesthetically Alterable Character Designs

US Patent:
4933866, Jun 12, 1990
Filed:
Nov 17, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/274347
Inventors:
Jay Markoff - Spring Valley CA
John R. Deubert - La Jolla CA
Assignee:
Vital Lasertype, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G06F 1562
US Classification:
364518
Abstract:
A process and system for generating an aesthetically altered character design with the aid of a computer includes the steps of providing the computer with coordinates defining a wide fixed reference character shape, providing the computer with corresponding coordinates defining a narrow fixed reference character shape, providing the computer with a desired degree of alteration to be made to the character shape in relation to one of the reference character shapes, and calculating in the computer coordinates of an aesthetically alterable character shape. Each of the calculated coordinates for the aesthetically altered shape is generated by interpolating in an amount equal to the desired degree between corresponding coordinates to the wide fixed and narrow fixed reference character shapes. When the desired degree of alteration is outside corresponding coordinates of the wide fixed and narrow fixed reference character shape, the calculated coordinates are generated by extrapolating between the corresponding coordinates of the wide fixed and narrow fixed reference character shapes.

System Of Operating An Automatic Plotter

US Patent:
4933876, Jun 12, 1990
Filed:
Dec 28, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/291537
Inventors:
Jay Markoff - San Diego CA
John R. Deubert - La Jolla CA
Assignee:
Vital LaserType, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
364520
Abstract:
A system and method of operating an automatic plotter device having marking instruments for drawing images onto a large sheet with the aid of a computer includes providing the computer with data defining the desired images, providing the plotter with a preselected plurality of marking instruments each having a specified stroke width, providing the computer with data corresponding to and representing the stroke width for each of the preselected plurality of marking instruments, calculating in the computer for each marking instrument the coordinates upon which each instrument is to draw onto the sheet based upon the size, shape, and location of the image and the appropriate width, and generating control signals to the plotter for controllably selecting and causing each marking instrument to draw on the sheet at locations according to the calculated stroke coordinates. The sheet may be paper, vellum or other clear plastic utilized for the screen exposure preparation process for purposes of screen printing. The marking instrument is preferably a felt tip pen containing opaque ink.
