Found in Translation: The Pantheon Paradigm for Structural Design The image of Rome’s Pantheon resonates and re-emerges throughout architectural history. In achieving this visual lineage, a parallel history of structural design and construction can be traced. Building from within this context, the infusion of contemporary technologies and methods creates both opportunity and risk in advancing the dialogue with architecture’s past. The Pantheon as paradigm offers a framework of study that advocates for two over-arching goals: first, for the expanded study of engineering history in the training and education of design professionals; and second, for an emphasis on communication and shared literacies in an integrated design process.

My study, completed in 2008, developed theory and parameters for a Preservation Engineering curriculum. The advocated coursework offers a sustainable component to Engineering programs, which focus primarily on new construction, and adds breadth to Architecture and Historic Preservation curricula to further develop studies in the technology and engineering of historic construction. The program is multi-disciplinary in nature and takes aim at problems derived from the academic and professional separation of engineering and architecture, bridging gaps through education and communication.
Fulbright Scholar, Switzerland, 1990
Fulbright Program
This year-long period of study focused on the early 20th century bridge designs of the Swiss engineer, Robert Maillart, considering how his integration of mechanics and aesthetics gave rise to a visually communicated language of structurally expressive forms. On-site evaluation of these designs considered issues of long-term durability. Research assistance included full-scale punching shear tests for steel slab-integrated column capitals, bending tests of carbon and glass fiber-reinforced concrete slabs, as well as participation in full-scale load tests of two new Swiss bridges.
