An improved and more efficient rotary mower comprised of a grass cutting assembly having two or more housings, each of said housing supporting and powering a single horizontally rotating blade, each of said housings being mounted as part of a group permitting verticaal motion by a housing and free orientation of its cutting blade independent of the other housings. An extra degree of freedom of motion of the individual housings results from support means which allows vertical motion and pivoting of a housing from a centralized support point. The assembly permits an improved grass cutting means over uneven terrain.

A turf grooming vehicle including a chassis and wheels supporting the chassis in terrain-following movement across a field includes a vacuum head assembly and a bin forming a receiver for loose turf material vacuumed from the surface of a field of turf. By jacking the receiver upwardly to pivot about an elevated axis of rotation the contents thereof can be discharged over the side of and into a vehicle disposed alongside the chassis. In addition, means forming a drive connection for operating both a fan for creating the suction as well as for operating hydraulic means for driving a rotatable grooming unit is coupled to a tractor or other pulling means so that the tractor and trailer can make extremely sharp turns. Further, the vacuum head assembly is arranged whereby it follows the surface of the ground independently of upward movements of the chassis (such as may be derived from the upward movements of the chassis wheels). Finally, means are arranged for evenly lifting and lowering opposite ends of the vacuum head assembly into and out of operative relation with the ground.

Wide area mower which can be attached to and detached from a tractor in a relatively short time. In one disclosed embodiment, the mower has a main frame which is detachably connected to the rear mount of a tractor, swing frames pivotally connected to the main frame for movement into and out of engagement with the side mounts of the tractor, means detachably locking the swing frames in engagement with the side mounts, and mowing heads mounted on the frames to the sides and rear of the tractor. In another disclosed embodiment, the mower includes a frame adapted for connection to a towing vehicle, a pair of side decks positioned on opposite sides of the frame, a center deck positioned between the side decks, a pair of rear decks positioned to the rear of and between the side decks and the center deck. Ground engaging wheels at the front and rear of each deck support the decks, with the wheels at the rear of the side decks and the center deck being aligned with the wheels at the front of the rear decks, and means pivotally mounting the decks to the frame so that the decks can follow the contour of the ground.

A mobile grading machine and method with a scraper structure including a grading blade supported by caster wheels trailing therebehind. A trailing connection is disposed between the scraper structure and the caster wheels in fixed lateral relation relative to the ends of the blade. A fixed towing connection is carried at a leading portion of the scraper adapted to be coupled to a towing assembly of a tractor in a manner so as to support the grading structure for terrain following movement. A laser sensor or receiver is carried by the grading machine for raising and lowering the grading blade as the receiver falls and rises in traveling across a field. The grading blade and receiver are sufficiently closely spaced longitudinally so as to cause the receiver to detect a change in the surface of the terrain substantially coincident with the arrival of the blade at the detected change.
