Education:
University of California, Berkeley 1972 - 1975
M. Arch., Building Technology, PlanningIn the Ph.D. Program, 1975-1978. While in graduate school at Berkeley, I worked with Professor Richard Bender on evaluations of HUD's Operation Breakthrough and a Federal Solar Energy Demonstration Program led by the same group (ex-NASA). The latter was for the Joint Economic Committee, U.S. Congress; the former for the National Science Foundation. I was Professor Bender's principal research associate, the beginning of our friendship and collaboration. While at Berkeley, I also became friends with Horst Rittel, the critic of first generation design methods, and took his class (with Mel Webber) on planning theory. Washington University in St. Louis 1966 - 1970
B.A., Architecture, HistoryJim Fitzgibbon, who worked with Buckminster Fuller, was a big influence. I had him in fourth year. He suggested that I go to Berkeley. I also benefited from Udo Kultermann and Norris Kelly Smith, the two (very different) historians teaching at the school. I was involved with design methods in this period, writing for the "Design Methods Group Newsletter."
