Abstract:
The invention provides a powder slurry composition comprising a first solid particulate component (a) dispersed in a crosslinking component (b) having at least one crosslinking resin which is liquid at 20Â C. First component (a) is in solid particulate form having an average particle size of from 3 to 30 microns. Component (a) has a compound (i) having a T 40Â C. and at least one carbamate or urea functional group, or a group convertible to a carbamate or urea group appended thereto. Crosslinking component (b) has at least one crosslinking resin (i) which is liquid at 20Â C. Most preferably, crosslinking component (b) will further include a self-crosslinking aminoplast resin (ii) having at least two aminoplast groups and at least two groups which are nonreactive with solid particulate first component (a) but which are reactive with said aminoplast groups. The powder slurry composition of the invention has a VOC of less than 1. 0 lbs. /gal and provides performance and application improvements over the prior art.

Abstract:
There is described a curable coating composition having at least one effect pigment which, upon cure, exhibits substantially improved orientation of the effect pigment and a corresponding improvement in appearance. The composition comprises: (A) a carbamate-functional component having a hydrophobicity equivalent to or greater than that of a carbamate-functional compound (Aâ) which is the reaction product of: (1) a compound comprising a plurality of hydroxyl groups, at least one of which is the result of a ring-opening reaction between an epoxy group and an organic acid group, and (2) cyanic acid or a compound comprising a carbamate group, and (B) a component comprising a plurality of groups that are reactive with the carbamate functional groups on component (A), and (C) at least one effect pigment, the curable coating composition when cured having a substantially improved effect pigment orientation. Preferably, the composition further comprises particular rheology control agents.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of making an acrylic graft polymer, especially a urethanized acrylic graft polymer. The method of the invention requires an ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture (a) comprising a monomer (ai) of a particular structure having at least one cyclic carbonate group and the polymerization of the monomer mixture (a) under free radical polymerization conditions to make an acrylic backbone polymer (b) comprising one or more cyclic carbonate functional groups (bi). At least one grafting moiety (c) is then provided, said grafting moiety (c) comprising at least one amine group (ci) selected from primary amines, secondary amines, and mixtures of both primary and secondary amines. The grafting moiety (c) is then grafted onto acrylic backbone polymer (b) via reaction between the at least one amine group (ci) and cyclic carbonate functional groups (bi) so as to make an urethanized acrylic graft polymer.
