Microprogram Controlled Digital Processor Having Addressable Flip/Flop Section

US Patent:
4037202, Jul 19, 1977
Filed:
Apr 21, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/570114
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
F41G 700
G06F 912
G06F 1104
G06F 1550
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
A digital processor which is adapted for use in the guidance and stabilization of a guided missile. The digital processor is adapted to store a predetermined macroprogram and to process signals produced by various elements within the missile in accordance with such stored program thereby to produce control signals for the missile's flight control mechanism. A microinstruction memory stores sets of microinstructions, each one of such sets corresponding to one of a number of stored macroinstructions which make up the macroprogram. A register is provided which is adapted selectively to load an addressed microinstruction or a digital test word serially applied by sources external to the missile. In such an arrangement the missile's digital processor may be readily checked out through a relatively simple interface mechanism, also included. In the digital processor is a set of addressable flip/flops adapted to be set or reset by signals both internal to and external to the processor.

Method Of Recognizing Patterns

US Patent:
4901362, Feb 13, 1990
Filed:
Aug 8, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/229395
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G06K 950
US Classification:
382 22
Abstract:
A method of identifying an object from a digitized image is disclosed. One embodiment of the method is particularly applicable to the classification of ships and a second embodiment is particularly applicable to the classification of aircraft. The digitized image of an unknown object is represented as a set of vertical vectors or, in the second embodiment, a set of radial vectors. The vectors are normalized and then compared to a library containing normalized digitized images of known objects. The unknown object is thereby identified as being similar to the known object corresponding to the library image most closely matching the image of the unknown object.

Sorting Apparatus

US Patent:
4604726, Aug 5, 1986
Filed:
Apr 18, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/485809
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G06F 724
US Classification:
364900
Abstract:
An improved apparatus for forming an ordered sequence of n digital numbers from a randomly arranged set of n digital numbers is shown to be made up of: (a) n registers, each initially holding a different one of the randomly arranged set of n digital numbers; (b) a digital comparator for each adjacent pair of registers to determine whether or not the digital numbers in each adjacent pair of registers are in the ordered sequence and to interchange the digital numbers in any adjacent pair of registers whenever such numbers are not in the ordered sequence; and (c) a switching arrangement, operative in response to each successive one of (2n-1) clock pulses, alternately to switch each digital comparator from the associated adjacent pair of registers to a different selected pair of registers whereby the digital numbers may be shifted through the n registers as required to form the ordered sequence.

Library Image Optimization

US Patent:
4887304, Dec 12, 1989
Filed:
Mar 16, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/326436
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G06K 964
US Classification:
382 30
Abstract:
A process is disclosed for forming reference images useful in object identification processes where an image of an unknown object is compared to each image in a library of reference images. The disclosed process forms the reference image by combining a plurality of images of objects of the same class.

Swap Scan Testing Of Digital Logic

US Patent:
4831623, May 16, 1989
Filed:
Jul 16, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/074101
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G06F 1100
G01R 3128
US Classification:
371 15
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for dynamically testing logic circuits transparent to their normal operation without placing restrictions on the logic circuit design. The apparatus is a swap scan register including an operational register for storing operational data and a test register for storing test data. The operational and test registers operate independently of each other. A swap circuit enables exchanging the operational and test register contents. According to the method disclosed after test data is stored in the test register, the operational register is interrupted and its contents swapped with the test register for one clock cycle. The test and operational registers are then swapped again to restore the original operational data to its pre-interrupt state and to provide test results in the test register.

Vertical Vector Pattern Recognition Algorithm

US Patent:
5040231, Aug 13, 1991
Filed:
Oct 17, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/258915
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G06K 964
US Classification:
382 34
Abstract:
A method of identifying an object from a digitized image is disclosed. The method is particularly applicable to the classification of ships. The digitized image of an unknown ship is represented as a set of vertical vectors. The vertical vectors are normalized and then compared to a library containing normalized digitized images of known ships. The unknown ship is thereby identified as being similar to the known ship corresponding to the library image most closely matching the image of the unknown ship.

Method Of Guiding Missiles

US Patent:
4898341, Feb 6, 1990
Filed:
Oct 12, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/256511
Inventors:
John Terzian - Winchester MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
F41G 722
US Classification:
244 316
Abstract:
A method of guiding a missle during the terminal phase of an intercept. Images, successively formed as the missile approaches the target areas, are represented by a set of vectors. As the missile approaches the target, the image of the target appears to grow larger, and an estimate of the growth is computed. One vector is selected as an aim point, and the missile is guided towards that point. In one embodiment, well-suited for use on small targets, a vector is also selected as a track point, and the distance between the aim point and the track point is computed. The seeker head is controlled to keep the track point in the image and the aim point is located by multiplying the distance between the track point and the aim point by the growth factor. In a second embodiment, well-suited for use with large targets, a track point is selected very near the aim point. As the image grows so that the aim point and track point cannot both be in the field of view, a new track point is selected.
