A system and process for interacting with a system in an insecure state is described. Before logging into a secure state of a computer system, a user is able to access limited information including calendar information regarding meetings for that day and the like. In some aspects of the invention, a user may interact with a displayed note pad for receiving handwritten or typed notes. Aspects of the described system and method permit a user to quickly review or interact with a computer prior to logging into a secured state of the computer system.

A credential is translated with one of different credential provider modules each translating a corresponding different type of credential into a common protocol. The translated credential is communicated through an API to a logon UI module to an operating system (OS) of a local machine. An OS logon module is called by the logon UI module to authenticate the translated credential against a credential database. A user identified by the translated credential is logged on to access the local machine when the authentication is successful. The credential can also be used with a selection received from the logon UI module via a corresponding one of different pre-log access provider (PLAP) modules that each communicate with the API. The API establishes a network session with an access service specified by the selected PLAP module when the credential is authenticated with the credential database.

The subject disclosure relates to managing z-dimensional ordering of elements within a computing system display through the use of z-order bands. As described herein, z-order bands are utilized to arrange windows and other graphics corresponding to respective application types. A policy engine controls which windows and/or other graphical elements can enter and exit each band. Graphical elements within a given band can additionally be subject to per-band properties corresponding to the band and/or user preferences. As additionally described herein, z-order bands and/or other suitable mechanisms are utilized to facilitate registration watermarking for a computing environment by rendering a registration watermark display upon determining that one or more licensed elements of a computing system have not been registered. The registration watermark display is assigned a z-order band that enables its display over all other graphical elements associated with the computing system and prevents other graphical elements from interfering with its display.

Certain applications, especially legacy applications, try to write to areas of the system that require administrator privileges and hence fail to run successfully for users with lessened privileges. The disclosed system redirects certain file writes, i.e., globally impactful file writes to specific locations that require administrator privileges and would otherwise fail for others users, so as to allow the same file writes to succeed by redirecting them to happen in the context of the user, i.e., in a per-user virtualization location. In particular, virtualization only occurs when the application is actually going to write to the file, not just when file access is requested without an intention of writing to or otherwise actually altering the file. Following virtualization, applications are redirected to use the virtualized files. The system thus allows users to run applications that otherwise would not be enabled, and to maintain a higher level of security when doing so.
