This disclosure describes a process for strengthening, by ion-exchange, the edges of an article separated from a large glass sheet after the sheet has been ion-exchanged to strengthen by exposing only the one or a plurality of the edges of the separated article to an ion-exchange medium (for example without limitation, a salt, paste, frit, glass) while the glass surface is maintained at temperatures less than 200 C.

A glass-based article of a composition comprising: from 48 mol. % to 75 mol. % SiO; from 8 mol. % to 40 mol. % AlO; from 9 mol. % to 40 mol. % Li2O; from 0 mol. % to 3.5 mol. % NaO; from 9 mol. % to 28 mol. % RO, wherein R is an alkali metal and RO comprises at least LiO and NaO; from 0 mol. % to 10 mol. % TaO; from 0 mol. % to 4 mol. % ZrO; from 0 mol. % to 4 mol. % TiO; from 0 mol. % to 3.5 mol. % R′O, R′ being a metal selected from Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Zn, and combinations thereof; and from 0 mol. % to 8 mol. % REO, RE being a rare earth metal selected from Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and combinations thereof. The glass is ion exchangeable. RO+R′O−AlO−TaO+1.5*REO−ZrO−TiOis in a range from −8 mol. % to 5 mol. %. ZrO+TiO+SnOis in a range from greater than or equal to 0 mol % to less than or equal to 2 mole %. The composition is free of AsO, SbO, and PbO.

Abstract:
Polymer-based portions comprise an index of refraction ranging from about 1.49 to about 1.55. In some embodiments, the polymer-based portion comprises the product of curing 45-75 wt % of a difunctional urethane-acrylate oligomer with 25-55 wt % of a difunctional cross-linking agent and optionally a reactive diluent. In some embodiments, the polymer-based portion comprises the product of curing 75-100 wt % of a reactive diluent and optionally one or more a difunctional urethane-acrylate oligomer and/or a difunctional cross-linking agent. Adhesives comprise an index of refraction ranging from about 1.49 to about 1.55. In some embodiments, the adhesive comprises the product of heating 10-35 wt % of a silane-hydride-terminated siloxane and 65-90 wt % of a vinyl-terminated siloxane. In some embodiments, the adhesive comprises the product of irradiating a thiol-containing siloxane and a photo-initiator with at least one wavelength of light that the photo-initiator is sensitive to. Foldable apparatus can comprise the polymer-based portion and/or adhesive.

Laminated glass-based articles are provided. The glass-based articles include at least a first glass-based layer, a second glass-based layer, and a polymer layer disposed between the first and second glass-based layers. At least one of the first and second glass-based layers has a thickness of less than or equal to 200 μm, and the polymer layer has a thickness of less than or equal to 100 μm. A glass laminate structure comprising an external glass sheet and an internal glass sheet wherein one or both of the glass sheets comprises SiO+BO+AlO≧86.5 mol. %. and RO—RO—AlO< about 5 mol. %.
