Method For Inserting Partitions

US Patent:
4763462, Aug 16, 1988
Filed:
Oct 24, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/923100
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corp. - Norristown PA
International Classification:
B65B 3544
US Classification:
53448
Abstract:
In an integrated container packing system where a mass of randomly oriented containers enter the system and are manipulated so that a partition can be inserted between groups of containers and then each group with the partition are placed in a shipping medium ready to be sent to inventory, the method of inserting the partition by relatively moving the containers and the partition in a forward direction, controlling the relative motion so that in alternately occurring periods of time, the velocity of the relative motion during one period of time is zero and during the next period of time the velocity of the relative motion gradually increases from zero to a maximum and then gradually back to zero and during each time the relative motion velocity is at zero, inserting the partition between a group of containers.

Dividable Cartons

US Patent:
5060802, Oct 29, 1991
Filed:
Jan 3, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/637195
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Berwyn PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corporation - Norristown PA
International Classification:
B65D 554
B65D 548
US Classification:
206602
Abstract:
In a dividable shipping carton, there are abutting C-shaped dividers which angled or chamfered to provide a space adjacent each side wall, each being dimensioned to receive the blade of a severing knife and to continue to receive the blade even with substantial deviation of the blade from the guide line and thereby prevent cutting of plastic bottles, etc. inside the carton.

Container Packing Machines

US Patent:
4962625, Oct 16, 1990
Filed:
Jun 6, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/362310
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corporation - Norristown PA
International Classification:
B65B 3544
B65B 2106
US Classification:
53157
Abstract:
In an integrated, continuous, container packing machine, where a constant supply of filled containers are moved along an axis and separated into discrete groups with each group fed to an insert station wherein a partition is inserted between containers of the group and then the group with the partition is fed to an operation to be placed or packed in a shipping medium, improvements which permit the machine to be rapidly changed for running a new batch of containers where the physical characteristics of the group and/or the physical characteristics of the containers in the group are different from the corresponding characteristics in the previously run batch.

Method Of Erecting Flat Folded Cases

US Patent:
4163414, Aug 7, 1979
Filed:
Feb 23, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/771166
Inventors:
Joseph L. Bachman - King of Prussia PA
George E. Ginther - King of Prussia PA
A. David Johnson - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corp. - Bridgeport PA
International Classification:
B31B 176
US Classification:
93 53M
Abstract:
Flat folded four-panel case is set up in a vertical takedown plane. The case is pulled out of the plane and manipulated to cause the four panels to move relative to each other so that the case assumes a diamond shape. The case is then partially erected. Next, one of the panels is held fixed (with the others being free to move) and a bottom flap is folded inwardly. This transmits forces to the panels so that the diamond shape changes to a square shape and the case is fully erected.

Method Of Carton Flap Relaxing

US Patent:
4551126, Nov 5, 1985
Filed:
Nov 9, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/550136
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
George E. Ginther - King of Prussia PA
Charles E. Zimmermann - Elverson PA
Albert D. Johnson - St. Davids PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corp. - Norristown PA
International Classification:
B31B 148
US Classification:
493453
Abstract:
Corrugated carton is moved between sprayers which apply water to the score lines of each major end flap and on opposite sides of the score bar about 1" up on the flap and 1" down on the panel. The major flaps are then bent into closed position and while bent, heat is applied to raise the temperature of the wet areas until the same are dry. Then, the bending means and heat are removed. Each end flap assumes a substantially closed position.

Gate Mechanism For Carton Erecting Machine

US Patent:
4273322, Jun 16, 1981
Filed:
Jul 9, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/055764
Inventors:
George E. Ginther - King of Prussia PA
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corporation - King of Prussia PA
International Classification:
B31B 106
US Classification:
271149
Abstract:
Gate has two carton restrainers. First restrainer holds the lead carton in magazine stack while the second is inoperative. For take-down of the lead carton, first restrainer is moved away while at the same time the second restrainer engages and holds the carton next to the lead carton to prevent the same (and the cartons behind it) from popping out of the gate.

Method For Opening And Inserting Multi-Cell Partitions

US Patent:
4829747, May 16, 1989
Filed:
May 4, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/045518
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
George E. Ginther - King of Prussia PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corp. - Norristown PA
International Classification:
B65B 4330
US Classification:
53457
Abstract:
Method contemplates: providing a set of collapsed multi-cell, crossed panel separator partitions arranged in upright position along a horizontal axis; applying vacuum grip to pull out the lead partition and move along the axis to a transfer station; relieving the pull-out vacuum grip and while supporting the partition in the upright position moving the same away from the transfer station along a second horizontal axis normal to the first axis to an opening station; applying vacuum grip to opposite sides of at least a single panel and rotating the panel to open the partition; and while the gripping force for opening is on the panel, moving the partition along a vertical axis down to an insert station and then removing the gripping force to thereby deposit the partition on the medium for which it is to serve its separating function.

Machine For Manufacture Of High Strength Shipping Cartons

US Patent:
4235159, Nov 25, 1980
Filed:
Oct 23, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/953350
Inventors:
A. David Johnson - Wayne PA
George E. Ginther - King of Prussia PA
Joseph L. Bachman - Wayne PA
Assignee:
Wayne Automation Corporation - King of Prussia PA
International Classification:
B31B 1102
B31B 1126
US Classification:
493309
Abstract:
Dividers and cartons are intermittently fed into the machine which automatically assembles the same by inserting one or more dividers into the carton and gluing tabs on the dividers to opposite panels of the carton. The machine has a magazine to feed in the dividers, a carton transporter to feed in the cartons, die means to bend edges of the divider to form the tabs, means to apply glue to the tabs, means to develop bonding pressure between tabs and panels together with a divider transporter. The divider transporter picks-off a divider from the magazine, deposits it in the die means for tab forming and then moves the formed divider into a carton while the tabs are sprayed with glue and then pressure bonded to opposite carton panels.
