A method of challenging an agent alarm for the detection of V and G agents hrough the use of a simulant compound which has no significant toxicity and which will test the three principal components of the alarm, namely the conversion filler, heating element, and the detection cell. The stimulant compound has the general formula ##STR1## wherein R" is a lower alkyl group selected to produce a readily displaced alkylmercapto moiety when reacted with the AgNO. sub. 3 and KF of the conversion filter and R is a longer chain alkyl selected to give a volatility similar to that of less volatile G agents.

The compounds of S-(2-dialkylaminoalkyl) alkyl phosphonothioic acids and hod of preparing said compounds possessing anticholinesterase activity comprising an aqueous solution which comprises dialkylaminoalkyl chloride salts which are converted to their corresponding dialkylmonoalkyl ammonium ions and alkylphosphonothioic acids forming a reaction mixture. The latter mixture is placed on a cation exchange resin with subsequent addition of water as an eluting agent giving rise to fractions containing the desired compounds.

A method comprising an unknown solution adding an organophosphorus thio a salt solution for sufficient time to form compounds having anticholinesterase activity in the reaction solution, contacting the reaction solution with a cholinesterase supported on a suitable substrate, adding indoxyl acetate and observing a non-color or blue color change in the substrate; the absence of color indicates the formation of compounds with anticholinesterase activity and the blue color of the substrate indicating that there was no formation of compounds with anticholinesterase activity.
