Method And Apparatus For Characterizing The Temporal Resolution Of An Imaging Device

US Patent:
7863897, Jan 4, 2011
Filed:
Sep 8, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/206279
Inventors:
Rajiv Gupta - Wayland MA, US
Stephen E. Jones - Cleveland Heights OH, US
Assignee:
The General Hospital Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
G01V 3/00
US Classification:
324309, 324307
Abstract:
A system and method for determining the temporal resolution of a tomographic imaging device uses an apparatus to drive one or more dynamic phantoms composed of multiple materials. The apparatus is placed at or near the isocenter of the imaging device and the one or more phantoms are moved to produce a plurality of dynamic features, each having a specified frequency. The dynamic features are imaged with the device and the acquired image data corresponding to the dynamic features is analyzed to determine a temporal modulation transfer value at each of the known specified frequencies. The temporal resolution of the imaging device is determined using these temporal modulation transfer values.

Guidance And Insertion System

US Patent:
2006022, Oct 12, 2006
Filed:
Jan 27, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/307231
Inventors:
Rajiv Gupta - Wayland MA, US
Steven Barrett - Cambridge, GB
Nevan Hanumara - Kingston RI, US
Jo-Anne Shepard - Dover MA, US
Alexander Slocum - Bow NH, US
Conor Walsh - Dublin, IE
International Classification:
A61B 19/00
US Classification:
606130000
Abstract:
Methods and devices are provided for guiding and inserting a tool into an object, such as tissue. In an exemplary embodiment, a guidance and insertion device is provided that can be remotely controlled to adjust an insertion trajectory of a tool, and to advance the tool into tissue to a desired penetration depth. The tool can be, for example, a biopsy device, a brachytherapy device, or a lumpectomy device. The device can be configured for use with an imaging apparatus, such as computed tomography (CT) images, to allow the device and tool to be operated while viewing the device positioned in relation to a target surgical site. The device can also be configured to be positioned directly on a patient, so as to passively compensate for respiratory chest motion, and it can include features to passively compensate for needle oscillation. In other exemplary embodiments, the device can be entirely disposable.

Inventors:
- Cambridge MA, US
- Somerville MA, US
Richard C. Lanza - Brookline MA, US
George Barbastathis - Boston MA, US
Rajiv Gupta - Wayland MA, US
Jonah Jacob - Brookline MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
Science Reseach Laboratory, Inc. - Somerville MA
International Classification:
H01J 35/06
G01N 23/044
H01L 21/66
Abstract:
System and method for imaging an integrated circuit (IC). The imaging system comprises an x-ray source including a plurality of spatially and temporally addressable electron sources, an x-ray detector arranged such that incident x-rays are oriented normal to an incident surface of the x-ray detector and a three-axis stage arranged between the x-ray source and the x-ray detector, the three-axis stage configured to have mounted thereon an integrated circuit through which x-rays generated by the x-ray source pass during operation of the imaging system. The imaging system further comprises at least one controller configured to move the three-axis stage during operation of the imaging system and selectively activate a subset of the electron sources during movement of the three-axis stage to acquire a set of intensity data by the x-ray detector as the three-axis stage moves along a three-dimensional trajectory.

Integrating Radiation Dosimeter

US Patent:
2018025, Sep 13, 2018
Filed:
Sep 27, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/760483
Inventors:
- Cambridge MA, US
Cody Andrew Dennett - Somerville MA, US
Sara Elizabeth Ferry - Cambridge MA, US
Rajiv Gupta - Wayland MA, US
International Classification:
G01T 1/06
G01T 1/10
A61N 5/10
Abstract:
An implantable dosimeter uses salt crystals such as NaCl or KCl, or other materials that vary in color as a function of incident, ionizing radiation. The color change of the salts may occur through the creation of F-centers, where electrons become trapped in crystal defects (e.g., halide vacancies) and absorb light at certain wavelengths. Vacancies in the salt crystals absorb photons at precise wavelengths. Thus, the change in color can be correlated to the integrated dose in an implantation site. The salt crystals may be optically coupled to optical fibers or the like for remote measurement of color using, e.g., a spectrometer and a computer system. In this manner, the dosage of ionizing radiation can be measured in vivo with a fault tolerant, passively integrating dosimeter.

Methods And Apparatus For X-Ray Imaging From Temporal Measurements

US Patent:
2017024, Aug 31, 2017
Filed:
Oct 29, 2015
Appl. No.:
15/517122
Inventors:
- Cambridge MA, US
- Boston MA, US
Rajiv Gupta - Wayland MA, US
Adam Pan - New Haven CT, US
International Classification:
G01N 23/083
H01J 35/14
G01T 1/24
H01J 35/06
G01N 23/04
G21K 1/04
Abstract:
For each X-ray path through a tissue, numerous trials are conducted. In each trial, X-ray photons are emitted along the path until a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode “clicks”. A temporal average—i.e., the average amount of time elapsed before a “click” occurs—is calculated. This temporal average is, in turn, used to estimate a causal intensity of X-ray light that passes through the tissue along the path and reaches the diode. Based on the causal intensities for multiple paths, a computer generates computed tomography (CT) images or 2D digital radiographic images. The causal intensities used to create the images are estimated from temporal statistics, and not from conventional measurements of intensity at a pixel. X-ray dosage needed for imaging is dramatically reduced as follows: a “click” of the photodiode triggers negative feedback that causes the system to halt irradiation of the tissue along a path, until the next trial begins.
