Method And Apparatus For Soft Keys Of An Electronic Device

US Patent:
7619615, Nov 17, 2009
Filed:
Aug 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/216420
Inventors:
Karen Donoghue - Arlington MA, US
Assignee:
Sun Microsystems, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 3/02
G09G 5/00
US Classification:
345169, 455566
Abstract:
An electronic device includes a keypad portion having at least one multifunction key and a display area displaying screen views having one or more soft key labels corresponding to respective ones of the multifunction keys. A display enhancing assembly enhances display of the soft key labels and/or menus in a manner that actively induces and trains the user to properly operate the multifunction keys in association with corresponding soft key labels. The display enhancing assembly employs visual cues such as a videographic moving arrow, help text bubbles, a sliding in/out presentation of menus in a series of menus and automated relative enlarging of pertinent text and/or dimming of non-pertinent screen contents.

Method And Apparatus For Augmenting Voice Data On A Mobile Device Call

US Patent:
2006019, Aug 31, 2006
Filed:
Dec 2, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/293036
Inventors:
Karen Donoghue - Arlington MA, US
William Barnert - Cambridge MA, US
International Classification:
H04M 1/64
US Classification:
379067100
Abstract:
A computer method and system for portable phone devices enable a user to compose and send a data message (e.g., a photo/image) during a voice call. The data message includes any of image data, audio (music) packette, an electronic calendar entry/event, contact information, HTML, text-based data, video data, multimedia and the like. During a voice call session between a user and a recipient, the user using a subject phone device obtains at least one data element. The subject phone device automatically forms and transmits a data message, including the at least one data element, to the recipient of the voice call session. The subject phone device maintains and continues the voice call session with voice data indicative of verbal conversation between the recipient and user. The subject phone device may be a PDA, mobile/cellular phone or other wireless communication and data device.

System For Manipulating Graphical Composite Image Composed Of Elements Selected By User From Sequentially Displayed Members Of Stored Image Sets

US Patent:
5880740, Mar 9, 1999
Filed:
Jul 12, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/679297
Inventors:
Mark David Halliday - Cambridge MA
Karen Donoghue - Cambridge MA
Assignee:
Network Sound & Light, Inc. - Chestnut Hill MA
International Classification:
G06T 300
US Classification:
345435
Abstract:
A computer graphical image manipulation and transmission system which enables a user to create a composite image by using a positional input device to select individual elements of the composite image to be changed. The system automatically presents alternative image elements in a predetermined sequence each time a given zone of the composite image is specified. The image modification proceeds by simply selecting image areas with a mouse or the like, eliminating the need for pop-up or drop-down menus, dialog boxes, tool boxes, or drag-and-drop image palettes. The selection of any image element may also cause an ancillary function to be performed, including the automatic alteration of the image elements associated with another zone of the image. The image composite image thus created may be converted into a standard bitmap file for use in other programs, or may take the form of an data structure containing zone coordinates and image identifiers, allowing the image modification session to be resumed and further allowing the transfer of an complex image by sending a relatively small amount of data when the individual image elements from which the image is constructed are available to both the transmitting and receiving station. The image manipulation and viewing mechanism may be utilized in standard applications adapted to receive and manipulate composite image applications in container documents, and is adapted for use with web browsers capable of displaying the composite images as imbedded images in web documents.

Apparatus For Manipulating Documents In A Data Processing System Utilizing Reduced Images Of Sheets Of Information Which Are Movable

G06F 3033
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
A data processing system provides a desk view which serves as a graphical user interface to the system. The desk view displays detailed miniaturized images of all documents possessed by the user. The compressed document images are user stackable and are automatically stacked when the images overlap by a predefined amount. The predefined amount is user settable. The desk view also displays icons of operations for mailing, stapling, copying and printing of documents. User activation of these operations occurs upon the removal of a stylus end from a surface after the electronic stylus has positioned a document image and icon relative to each other. Some operations include a screen view enabling user establishment of parametes of the operation after activation.
