Abstract:
Disclosed are compounds of the formula: or the pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic salts thereof wherein: W is oxygen or sulfur; X is (un)substituted lower alkyl; or X is (un)substituted aryl or heteroaryl; Y is hydrogen or lower alkyl; Z is lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, or (un)substituted lower alkyl; T is (un)substituted aryl or heteroaryl. The compounds are highly selective agonists, antagonists, or inverse agonists for GABAa brain receptors, or prodrugs of agonists, antagonists, or inverse agonists for GABAa brain receptors. Thus these compounds are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety, sleep and seizure disorders, Downs Syndrome, overdose with benzodiazepine drugs, and for the enhancement of memory.

Abstract:
This invention relates to benzimidazoles, pyridylimidazoles and related bicyclic heteroaryl compounds, all of which may be described by of Formula I The invention is particularly related to such compounds that bind with high selectivity and high affinity to the benzodiazepine site of GABAreceptors.
