Resonant Fiber Optic Accelerometer With Noise Reduction Using A Closed Loop Feedback To Vary Pathlength

US Patent:
4900918, Feb 13, 1990
Filed:
Aug 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/082255
Inventors:
Kevin M. Killian - Hackensack NJ
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H01J 516
G01D 534
US Classification:
250227
Abstract:
A pair of resonant optical cavities are used to measure shifts in length of a beam which deflects under acceleration. One end of each optical cavity is highly reflective and the other end partially reflective, thus permitting resonating light to exit the resonators. The light outputs of the two resonators is combined and the resultent beat frequency is used to detect deflections of the beam.

Fiber Optic Accelerometer Using Closed Feedback Relation To Vary Pathlength

US Patent:
4876447, Oct 24, 1989
Filed:
Aug 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/082258
Inventors:
Kevin M. Killian - Hackensack NJ
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morris County, Morris Township NJ
International Classification:
H01J 516
G01D 534
US Classification:
250227
Abstract:
Optical interferometric techniques are used in order to measure deflection in a cantilever beam. Light is directed through plural light paths which are changed in length during deflection of the beam. The light recombines and light interferance is used to measure deflection of the beams.

Method For Controlling The Wavelength Of An Optical Fiber-Based Light Source

US Patent:
6327277, Dec 4, 2001
Filed:
Dec 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/215834
Inventors:
Kevin Mark Killian - Hillsdale NJ
Assignee:
Honeywell International Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
H01S 330
H01S 313
H01S 500
G02B 626
G01B 902
US Classification:
372 6
Abstract:
The output wavelength of a laser-diode pumped fiber source can be stabilized at its minimum value irrespective of temperature and the age of the laser diode by the seeking the minimum output wavelength of the fiber source. By introducing a dither on the temperature of the pump laser diode, a measurement feedback loop can be used to determine the optimal value of the temperature. Once determined, the temperature is used to fix the wavelength of the source.

Closed Loop Fiber Optic Gyroscope With Signal Processing Arrangement For Improved Performance

US Patent:
5278631, Jan 11, 1994
Filed:
Apr 24, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/873911
Inventors:
Walter P. Hollinger - Mahwah NJ
Kevin M. Killian - Lincoln Park NJ
Robert A. Kovacs - West Orange NJ
Assignee:
Allied Signal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
G01C 1964
US Classification:
356350
Abstract:
A closed loop fiber optic gyro features signal processing wherein square wave phase modulation is added to a modulation drive signal after overflow logic so that the square wave modulation will not cause a phase modulation ramp to exceed overflow/underflow logic limits. The arrangement is such that the phase modulation causes a retrace with each modulation period when the amplitude of the ramp is within predetermined limits. The square wave amplitude from a cycle immediately after a retrace is considered as errant data that should be excluded from a phase nulling loop. Thus, the phase nulling loop has more accurate input data so that feedback will be accomplished more effectively for improved gyro performance.

Optical Signal Noise Reduction For Fiber Optic Gyroscopses

US Patent:
5898496, Apr 27, 1999
Filed:
Feb 14, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/800944
Inventors:
Sidney Xi-Yi Huang - Westwood NJ
Naveen Sarma - Rutherford NJ
Kevin Mark Killian - Hillsdale NJ
James Edward Goodwin - Ramsey NJ
International Classification:
G01C 912
US Classification:
356350
Abstract:
The RIN (random intensity noise) component of the random walk error of a fiber optic gyroscope can be reduced by utilizing an unpolarized light signal during processing. By depolarizing the light wave modulated by the fiber optic sensing coil or combining it with the unmodulated light wave of orthogonal polarization, a 3 db reduction in RIN can be achieved.

Closed Loop Fiber Optic Gyroscope With Reduced Sensitivity To Electronic Drift

US Patent:
5309220, May 3, 1994
Filed:
Apr 24, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/873133
Inventors:
Walter P. Hollinger - Mahwah NJ
Kevin M. Killian - Lincoln Park NJ
Robert A. Kovacs - West Orange NJ
Assignee:
AlliedSignal Inc.
A variable time constant in a retrace correction loop gives better retrace limit correction performance when the gyro is first turned on as during a "warm-up" period. The amplitude of the gyro square wave output is determined by taking the difference between the output of the first half cycle of the square wave modulation and the average of adjacent second half cycles thereof. An error signal for a retrace limit is developed by considering changes in the square wave amplitude and not the square wave amplitude itself. Corrections in the retrace limit are implemented via a variable digital retrace point.

Closed Loop Fiber Optic Gyroscope With Fine Angle Resolution

US Patent:
5280339, Jan 18, 1994
Filed:
Apr 24, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/873910
Inventors:
Walter P. Hollinger - Mahwah NJ
Kevin M. Killian - Lincoln Park NJ
Robert A. Kovacs - West Orange NJ
Assignee:
AlliedSignal Inc.
Corrections to the retrace limit are implemented so as to scale a digital output, which enables the determination of accumulated gyro angle with a finer resolution than simple output pulse accumulation as has heretofore been the case.
