Suspension System For A Wheelchair

US Patent:
6796568, Sep 28, 2004
Filed:
Aug 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/223645
Inventors:
Charles J. Martis - Wyoming PA
Mark E. Smith - Exeter PA
James P. Mulhern - Hunlock Creek PA
Assignee:
Pride Mobility Products Corporation - West Pittston PA
International Classification:
B60G 308
US Classification:
280124111, 2803041, 280755, 180932, 180907, 267152
Abstract:
A suspension system for mounting a pair of wheels to a wheelchair is disclosed. The system includes a crossbar pivotally mounted to the wheelchair so as to pivot about a longitudinal axis. At least one spring assembly is located between the crossbar and the wheelchair frame for controlling the pivoting of the crossbar. A hinge assembly is mounted on each lateral end of the crossbar. The hinge assembly includes a first hinge component attached to the crossbar so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis, and a second hinge component resiliently connected to the first hinge component. The resilient connection biases the second hinge connection against rotation with respect to the first hinge component. A wheel and yoke assembly are mounted to the second hinge component.

Dual-Track Tilt Mechanism

US Patent:
2009008, Apr 2, 2009
Filed:
Oct 1, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/243606
Inventors:
Corey Blauch - Dunmore PA, US
James Patrick Mulhern - Nanticoke PA, US
International Classification:
A61G 5/10
US Classification:
2803041
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a tilt-in-space wheelchair that limits the shift of the center of a gravity of a wheelchair occupant during tilting. The wheelchair comprises a main frame adapted to be supported on a surface by wheels, a seat frame for supporting a occupant, and an arc plate for slidably or rollably supporting the seat frame with respect to the main frame. The arc plate defines a first track and a second track that guide the tilting of the seat frame relative to the frame. The first track and second track may have non-constant curvatures. Further, the first track and second track may be arranged non-concentrically on the arc plate and may have different lengths.
