Theragenics Corporation - Buford GA
International Classification:
A61N 5/00
US Classification:
600 3
Abstract:
A brachytherapy device for the provision of brachytherapy is disclosed. The brachytherapy device has at least one source lumen located outside a movable surface of the device. The source lumen may be secured to the movable outer surface in a manner whereby relative movement of the source lumen relative to the movable outer surface is permitted. Expandable Brachytherapy Device

US Patent:
8398534, Mar 19, 2013
Filed:
Jan 22, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/692289
Inventors:
Jack C. White - Alpharetta GA, US
David Wesley Stephens - Cornelia GA, US
Amit Prakash Govil - Gainesville FL, US
Joshua J. Bergman - Myrtle Point OR, US
Nathan Christopher Griffith - Lawrenceville GA, US
Kyle Kevin Millage - Flemington NJ, US
Assignee:
Theragenics Corporation - Buford GA
International Classification:
A61N 5/00
US Classification:
600 3
Abstract:
A brachytherapy device including an elongate member comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion. The device also includes a movable surface portion surrounding at least the distal portion of the elongate member and a plurality of source lumen tubes defining respective source lumens, the source lumen tubes being located around the elongate member, distal ends of the source lumen tubes coupled to the distal portion of the elongate member, the source lumen tubes extending a sufficient distance in a proximal direction such that the source lumen tubes extend outside a body when distal portions of the source lumen tubes are positioned in a body cavity for brachytherapy. The device also has structure coupled to the distal ends of the source lumen tubes for positioning the distal portions of the source lumen tubes at different distances from the elongate member for brachytherapy by exerting a force in a proximal direction on the distal ends of the source lumen tubes, the structure including an actuator for actuating the structure, at least a portion of the actuator being located outside the body when the distal portions of the source lumen tubes are positioned in a body cavity for brachytherapy. The device also includes a ring, tube or manifold securing a portion of the source lumen tubes proximal to the distal portion around the elongate member and a source of radiation suitable for insertion into the source lumens.

Brachytherapy Devices And Methods Of Using Them

US Patent:
2004013, Jul 15, 2004
Filed:
Jan 15, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/342536
Inventors:
Jack White - Alpharetta GA, US
Stephen Carr - Flowery Branch GA, US
Kyle Millage - Flemington NJ, US
International Classification:
A61N005/00
US Classification:
600/003000
Abstract:
Brachytherapy devices are provided for delivering a substantially uniform dose rate of radiation to a treatment area at a predetermined treatment depth. The devices include a holder defining a cavity, and a radioactive material located within the cavity. The holder comprises radiation-shielding material therein. The holder and the radioactive material are positioned to cooperatively provide a substantially uniform dose rate of radiation to a treatment area at a predetermined treatment depth. Also disclosed are methods for treating macular degeneration or ocular melanoma. The methods involve positioning a brachytherapy device in contact with or in close proximity to tissue located in a treatment area and exposing the tissue located in the treatment area to a therapeutic dose of radiation, which is delivered at a substantially uniform dose rate over the treatment area at a predetermined treatment depth. The devices and methods of the invention also ensure that the radiation delivered outside the treatment area is substantially reduced relative to the radiation delivered within the treatment area to minimize exposure of healthy tissue to radiation. The provision of a substantially uniform dose rate in the treatment area prevents substantial over- and under-exposure to radiation of different portions of the tissue in the treatment area.
