Filed:
Dec 4, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/309567
Inventors:
Constantine N. Manis - Monmouth Junction NJ, US
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence F. Durfee - Washington NJ, US
International Classification:
H04M 1104
US Classification:
34031002, 34031001, 34031006, 34031008
Abstract:
System, apparatus and method for connecting a passive optical network (“PON”) to a power line communications (“PLC”) network using a PLC HeadEnd installed at the PON to provide for distribution of high speed, broadband data communications services available on the PON to the PLC network using high speed, broadband PLC data signals. Where the PLC HeadEnd is installed on a medium voltage power distribution network, a PLC bypass unit is installed at a medium voltage/low voltage power transformer in the PLC network to provide PLC signal connectivity between the MV and LV networks. A PLC residential gateway is installed at each end user facility, such as a home or business, desiring broadband service available on the PON.

Method And System For Power Line Network Fault Detection And Quality Monitoring

US Patent:
6917888, Jul 12, 2005
Filed:
May 6, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/430087
Inventors:
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence F. Durfee - Washington NJ, US
Dirk Walvis - Santa Cruz CA, US
Assignee:
Arkados, Inc. - North Plainfield NJ
International Classification:
G06F019/00
US Classification:
702 59, 324512
Abstract:
Fault detection and power network quality monitoring are performed for a power line network using power line communications (“PLC”) signal transceiving and data processing capabilities. Power line signals are continuously received and processed to obtain signal data representative of power line network operating conditions that are expressed in the received power line signals. The harmonic content and noise signature of the signal data are evaluated with reference to known fault signature data and power line network topology properties for detecting and identifying the location of an existing or anticipated fault in the power line network and assessing power transmission quality of the network.

Method And System For Timing Controlled Signal Transmission In A Point To Multipoint Power Line Communications System

US Patent:
7369579, May 6, 2008
Filed:
Sep 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/671126
Inventors:
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Dirk Walvis - Santa Cruz CA, US
Lawrence F. Durfee - Washington NJ, US
International Classification:
H04J 3/06
US Classification:
370509, 370208, 370442, 34031011
Abstract:
Power line communication (“PLC”) signals are transmitted between a head-end PLC transceiver coupled to multiple remote PLC transceivers over a electric power and communications distribution network in accordance with a timing controlled PLC data frame which determines how much bandwidth is allocated to downstream transmission from the head-end to the remotes and to upstream transmissions from one or more of the remotes to the head-end. The configuration of the timing controlled data frame can be dynamically modified to achieve higher bandwidth for the downstream traffic and to satisfy changing bandwidth needs of each remote.

Method And System Of Channel Analysis And Carrier Selection In Ofdm And Multi-Carrier Systems

US Patent:
8565062, Oct 22, 2013
Filed:
Sep 7, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/899853
Inventors:
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence F. Durfee - Washington NJ, US
Richard Walvis - Santa Cruz CA, US
Michael J. Macaluso - Jackson NJ, US
Assignee:
STMicroelectronics, Inc. - Coppell TX
International Classification:
H04J 11/00
US Classification:
370208, 370241
Abstract:
The invention presents a novel method to channel estimation in OFDM systems. The embodiment of this invention is a block of new logic and modifications performed to other components of the system, added to any existing OFDM receiver, which utilizes information available from other blocks as found in the receiver. This logic would improve the units' error rate because of the improved channel quality estimations it makes available. This improvement is made possible because both channel noise data and channel signal data are used in the estimation process. This data goes through a learning process over time and multiple data blocks for further improvements in the quality of the estimate. This improvement is possible without any direct communications with other remote units, but it could be used in a multi-node environment to improve the performance of the system as the whole.

Frequency Management And Policing

US Patent:
2003003, Feb 27, 2003
Filed:
Aug 2, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/211031
Inventors:
Constantine Manis - Monmouth Junction NJ, US
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence Durfee - Washington NJ, US
International Classification:
H04M011/04
US Classification:
340/310010, 340/310030
Abstract:
A method and system for providing coexistence of power line communication technologies on a common powerline and to communicate with each other. A plurality of devices is provided, each of a different and non-compatible powerline communication technologies. A set of predefined beacon signals for each device is also provides, each signal having a frequency bands. The bands are continuously monitoring for activity. From the activity, necessary changes are derived to accommodation modes to identify devices which may operate outside a norm causing the network of devices to operate incorrectly.

Powerline Communications System For Providing Multiple Services To Isolated Power Generating Plants

US Patent:
2003021, Nov 27, 2003
Filed:
Apr 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/423787
Inventors:
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence Durfee - Washington NJ, US
Brion Ebert - Easton PA, US
International Classification:
H04M011/04
H04Q009/00
G08C019/22
US Classification:
340/870070, 340/310010
Abstract:
Power line communications (“PLC”) technology components are included within a remote, isolated electric power generating system to provide that a single facility supplies electric power and high speed, broadband data communications access services over the same electric power network. The costs of deploying high speed, broadband data communications services in a remote, isolated community are reduced because minimal additional hardware and maintenance operations are required. The PLC technology permits a service provider to monitor and control electric power plant operating and security conditions and to obtain customer billing information concerning electric power consumption and high speed, broadband access services usage from a remote location via broadband data communication signals exchanged with the plant, thereby reducing operating costs and improving operating efficiencies.

Method And System For Media Content Data Distribution And Consumption

US Patent:
2004000, Jan 8, 2004
Filed:
Nov 13, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/293129
Inventors:
Constantine Manis - Monmouth Junction NJ, US
Oleg Logvinov - East Brunswick NJ, US
Lawrence Durfee - Washington NJ, US
International Classification:
G10L019/00
US Classification:
704/500000
Abstract:
A time synchronization beacon, which includes a plurality of timing signals at a plurality of different respective carrier frequencies, is synchronously transmitted over a power line network to synchronize consumption of media content data, such as audio data, which has been transmitted over the network from a power line communications (“PLC”) audio source to PLC equipped media content consumption devices, such as stereo audio speaker sets. The sets of speakers can be located in different respective rooms throughout a facility. The audio data can be in the form of network audio network data packets including one or more channels of audio data. The PLC consumption devices select which transmitted channel data is received and consumed. The beacon coordinates the start time of consumption of segments of audio data samples, and the sample-to-sample consumption time interval at PLC equipped consumption devices. The network packets can be addressed for desired PLC consumption devices using PLC network addressing methods.
