The invention provides a system and method for making a data update, such as a directory update, to a magneto-optic disk which includes: copying designated directory sectors from the disk to a cache buffer, the designated directory sectors containing the portion of the directory which is to be updated; updating the directory portion to be updated in the cache buffer to provide an updated directory portion; writing the updated directory portion to a directory consistency block on the disk so as to provide a backup of the updated directory portion; erasing the designated directory sectors from the disk; writing the updated directory portion from the cache buffer to the designated directory sectors; verifying that the updated directory portion has been written to the designated directory sectors on the disk; and erasing the directory consistency block if there is verification that the updated directory portion has been written to the designated directory sectors on the disk. The system and method may further include recovery of the updated directory portion from the directory consistency block if the updated directory portion has not been written to the designated directory sectors, which would be evident from the non-erased state of the directory consistency block.

A vehicle steering wheel rotation restraining apparatus which comprises a restraining arm located within the hub of a steering wheel and which is extendable to a steering wheel rotation restraining position outwardly of the steering wheel and retractable within the steering wheel to allow freedom of use of the steering wheel. The restraining apparatus is provided with a lock mechanism on or associated with the exterior surface of the hub for a user to release or lock the restraining arm. The restraining arm is normally located within the hub of the steering wheel and upon opening of the lock device, the restraining arm will automatically extend outwardly to its full steering wheel rotation restraining position. In this latter position, the arm is sufficient in length to preclude any significant turning of the steering wheel since it will impact with a rigid portion of the vehicle or the legs of the vehicle driver. Thus, the restraining arm is easy to use.

A one way rotary force transmission system comprising a rotary force input means for receiving force from operatively associated drive means to impart an angular input velocity thereto; a rotary output means for rotation by said rotary force input means in only one direction to impart an angular output velocity thereto; rotatable force transmission means having at least one transmission member displaceable relative to the rotary force output means between an input force transfer position of direct positive input force transfer between the transmission means and the rotary force output means and a non-force transfer position preventing transfer of force between the rotary output means and the rotary force input means; and transmission actuating means operatively associated with the one transmission member of the transmission means for causing displacement thereof to the input force transmission position in response to applied force causing an angular input velocity greater than the angular output velocity of said rotary output means and to the non-force transfer position in response to reduction in angular input velocity of said rotary force input means below the angular velocity of the rotary output means and being in substantially non-force transfer and in non-load bearing relationship with the rotatable force transmission means and the rotary output means in the input force transfer position.
