Water Curable Polyurethane Compositions And Uses Thereof

US Patent:
6870000, Mar 22, 2005
Filed:
Mar 31, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/403647
Inventors:
Laxmi C. Gupta - Los Alamitos CA, US
International Classification:
C08J003/00
C08K003/20
C08L075/00
C08G018/00
C08G018/32
US Classification:
524591, 524590, 524839, 524840, 528 44, 528 85
Abstract:
Increased health, safety, and environmental awareness motivated the development of new and improved water curing technology for formulating, manufacturing, and using water curable compositions (also referred to in the art as water induced urethanes). The present invention is based, at least in part, upon the concept of formulating NCO functional resins used in water curable compositions from one or more polyisocyanate constituents that comprise at least one sterically hindered isomer of diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI). These isomers have a combination of exceptionally low vapor pressure and suitable moisture reactivity that lead to numerous advantages. Due to their low volatility, these isomers may be substituted for all or a portion of the TDI content of a conventional water induced urethane formulation. Particularly preferred embodiments eliminate any TDI, have 100% solids, are solvent free, and are characterized by essentially zero VOC emissions with respect to isocyanate. The compositions are substantially more environmentally friendly than conventional formulations.

Polyurea Coating Compositions

US Patent:
7001948, Feb 21, 2006
Filed:
May 13, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/145325

Laxmi C. Gupta - Los Alamitos CA, US
Ashish Dhuldhoya - Chino Hills CA, US
Assignee:
American Polymer Corporation - Santa Fe Springs CA
International Classification:
C08L 75/00
US Classification:
524871
Abstract:
A polyurea coating layer is provided, which is the reaction product of an isocyanate composition and an amine composition. The isocyanate composition comprises isocyanate functional compounds selected from a first set of isocyanate compounds having an average isocyanate functionality of at least about 3 and having an equivalent weight of from about 180 to about 240. The first set of isocyanate compounds preferably are at least about 65% of the isocyanate compounds. The isocyanate composition has an average isocyanate functionality of at least about 2. 5. The amine composition comprises amine functional compounds selected from a first set of secondary amine compounds having an equivalent weight of from about 200 to about 280 (preferably as about 50 to about 80% of the amine compounds), and a second set of secondary amine compounds having an equivalent weight of from about 30 to about 180 (preferably as about 20 to about 40% of the amine compounds). The amine composition has an average amine functionality of about 1. 5 to about 2. 5.

Water Curable Polyurethane Compositions With Improved Viscosity Characteristics

US Patent:
7148287, Dec 12, 2006
Filed:
May 13, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/844957
Inventors:
Laxmi C. Gupta - Los Alamitos CA, US
International Classification:
C08G 18/10
US Classification:
524871, 528 59
Abstract:
Compositions incorporating water-curable urethane constituent(s) are formulated with favorable viscosity and viscosity stability characteristics, while at the same time, preserving desired hardness characteristics. The present invention is particularly useful in applications in which water-curable compositions include NCO-functional resins having relatively high NCO content and/or incorporate MDI-based constituents. Preferred modes of practicing the invention include implementing one or more formulation strategies to help retain hardness while preserving good viscosity characteristics. These preferred strategies involve (i) balancing scavenger, polyisocyanate and polyfunctional polyol content of the compositions or resins thereof, as the case may be, (ii) formulating an NCO-functional resin with chain extender constituent(s) to enhance viscosity stability, (iii) formulating with one or more plasticizers that enhance viscosity performance, and (iv) combinations of two or more of these strategies.

Methods For Applying Fire Retardant Systems, Compositions And Uses

US Patent:
7833575, Nov 16, 2010
Filed:
Nov 7, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/593747
Inventors:
Laxmi C. Gupta - Los Alamitos CA, US
International Classification:
B05D 1/12
B05D 1/36
US Classification:
427202, 427180, 427201
Abstract:
A method is provided for applying a fire retardant coating system. The method comprises providing a first component that is a coatable polymeric coating composition and a second component comprising granules, wherein the granules comprise a polymeric matrix comprising a plurality of regions of fire retardant material ingredient incorporated therein. The first component and the second component are separate as delivered to the site of application. The first component and the second component are applied onto a substrate so that the granules are adhered to the substrate by the polymeric coating composition. The polymeric coating composition is then allowed to cure to form a fire-retardant coating. The resulting fire-retardant coating affords surprising fire retardancy performance.
