Polycarbonate Based Elastomeric Coating Compositions

US Patent:
4692383, Sep 8, 1987
Filed:
Jul 21, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/887456
Inventors:
Robert J. Schmitt - Pittsburgh PA
Leon A. Perez - Pittsburgh PA
Robert A. Montague - Allison Park PA
Marvin T. Tetenbaum - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
B32B 2738
B05D 302
C08F28300
US Classification:
428414
Abstract:
A coating composition is composed of a material or mixture of materials adapted to provide a source of: (i) carbonate moieties; (ii) isocyanate groups; and (iii) phosphatized polyepoxide essentially free of oxirane groups. The coating composition has excellent elongation and is particularly useful as a coating applied directly to metal. The coating composition is also useful as a primer in the preparation of multilayer coatings having good flexibility.

Method For Preparing Multi-Layered Coated Articles And The Coated Articles Prepared By The Method

US Patent:
4822685, Apr 18, 1989
Filed:
Dec 10, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/130923
Inventors:
Leon A. Perez - Pittsburgh PA
Marvis E. Hartman - Pittsburgh PA
Naomi R. Suss - Westlake OH
Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
B05D 136
B05D 700
B32B 2700
B32B 2740
US Classification:
4284233
Abstract:
A method of forming a multilayered coating on a substrate involves the steps of: (I) applying to the surface of a substrate an aqueous based film forming composition comprising color pigments and an aqueous polyurethane dispersion comprising the reaction product of: (a) a substantially branched, isocyanate containing prepolymer; and (b) a polyamine having primary and/or secondary amino groups; (II) applying a clear film forming composition over the basecoat of step (I); (III) allowing the clear composition of step (II) to at least partially dry or cure to form a transparent topcoat over said basecoat.

Coating Compositions Prepared From Michael Adducts

US Patent:
4786682, Nov 22, 1988
Filed:
Jun 25, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/066388
Inventors:
Leon A. Perez - Pittsburgh PA
H. Hayne Crum - Gibsonia PA
Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C08G 1830
US Classification:
525 28
Abstract:
A coating composition contains; A. an ungelled Michael adduct formed by reacting, under conditions sufficient to form a Michael adduct, (a) a material containing one or more primary and/or secondary amino groups and at least two hydroxyl groups; (b) a material containing at least two alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated moieties; with the proviso that the reactants (a) and (b) are selected such that the resultant Michael adduct contains hydroxyl functionality; and B. a curing agent adapted to crosslink with the hydroxyl functionality present on the Michael adduct; said adduct being stable under the curing conditions for the coating composition. The aforedescribed coating compositions are particularly useful as anti-chip primers.
