Expandable Packer Isolation System

US Patent:
6725934, Apr 27, 2004
Filed:
Dec 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/026031
Inventors:
Martin P. Coronado - Houston TX
Edward T. Wood - Kingwood TX
Benn A. Voll - Houston TX
Mohamed F. Khodaverdian - The Woodlands TX
Van Nhat Ho - Houston TX
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4314
US Classification:
166313, 166382, 166387
Abstract:
A completion technique to replace cementing casing, perforating, fracturing, and gravel packing with an open hole completion is disclosed. Each zone to be isolated by the completion assembly features a pair of isolators, which are preferably tubular with a sleeve of a sealing material such as an elastomer on the outer surface. The screen is preferably made of a weave in one or more layers with a protective outer, and optionally an inner, jacket with openings. The completion assembly can be lowered on rigid or coiled tubing which, internally to the completion assembly, includes the expansion assembly. The expansion assembly is preferably an inflatable design with features that provide limits to the delivered expansion force and/or diameter. A plurality of zones can be isolated in a single trip.

Tubular Expansion Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
7028770, Apr 18, 2006
Filed:
Sep 30, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/260139
Inventors:
Martin P. Coronado - Cypress TX, US
Andy Tom - Houston TX, US
Van N. Ho - Houston TX, US
Fatih M. Kara - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes, Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 23/00
US Classification:
166206, 166207, 166215, 166277
Abstract:
Tools for expanding downhole tubulars into each other or in open hole are disclosed. One embodiment uses a movable cone biased by Bellville washers to move longitudinally against such bias and allow collets to move radially in or out to a predetermined maximum diameter. A release system allows collet retraction to avoid hang up on removal. In an alternate embodiment, more suitable for open hole applications, pressurized gas pushes a movable cone longitudinally against the collets. A stationary cone is on the opposite side of the collets from the movable cone. The collet rides out or in between the cones and raises the gas pressure when forced in. A pressure actuated release allows the lower cone to shift downwardly to allow the collets to retract for removal.

Method And Apparatus For Testing Embedded Memory On Devices With Multiple Processor Cores

US Patent:
7155637, Dec 26, 2006
Filed:
Apr 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/425410
Inventors:
Nathan Weyer Wright - MissouriCity TX, US
Nicholas Henry Schutt - Houston TX, US
Van Ho - Stafford TX, US
Assignee:
Texas Instruments Incorporated - Dallas TX
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 8, 714723
Abstract:
The disclosed method and apparatus enables the testing of multiple embedded memory arrays associated with multiple processor cores on a single computer chip. According to one aspect, the disclosed method and apparatus identifies certain rows and columns within each of the embedded memory arrays that need to be disabled and also identifies certain redundant rows and columns in the embedded memory array to be activated. According to another aspect, the disclosed method and apparatus generates a map indicating where each of the memory failures occurs in each embedded memory array. If the testing process determines that the embedded memory array cannot be repaired, then a signal is provided directly to an external testing device indicating that the embedded memory array is non-repairable. Similarly, if the testing process determines that the failures in the embedded memory array can be repaired, then a signal is provided directly to an external testing apparatus indicating that the embedded memory array is repairable. Lastly, if no failures are found in an embedded memory array, then a signal is provided to an external testing apparatus indicating that the embedded memory array contains no failures.

Pressure-Actuated Running Tool

US Patent:
6173786, Jan 16, 2001
Filed:
Mar 9, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/265297
Inventors:
Timothy W. Sampson - Spring TX
Van N. Ho - Houston TX
Garry R. Kaiser - Spring TX
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 2308
US Classification:
166383
Abstract:
A running tool is disclosed to deliver tools downhole, preferably supported on a wireline. The running tool will not release the downhole tool before the desired depth is reached, even if an obstruction is encountered. The tool has the ability to release upon application of pressure in the wellbore. The tool features a floating piston with a pre-charged chamber on one side. Hydrostatic pressure acts on the opposite side of the floating piston as the running tool descends. When the downhole tool reaches its desired depth and becomes supported, slacking on the wireline traps the hydrostatic on one side of the floating piston. Applied wellbore pressure, acting on a release piston exposed to the trapped hydrostatic on its opposite side, shifts the release piston and releases the running tool from the downhole tool. On the way uphole, the trapped hydrostatic pressure is released.
