Abstract:
A medical device ( ) such as a radio frequency dilator sheath for separating an encapsulated elongated structure ( ) such as an electrical cardiac lead implanted in biological tissue ( ) such as a vessel leading to or from a patients heart. The radio frequency dilator sheath includes inner and outer coaxial dilator sheaths ( and ) with respective beveled distal ends ( and ) for mechanically loosening and separating encapsulating tissue from an implanted electric cardiac lead. The beveled distal end of the inner sheath is truncated to form a transverse face or surface ( ) that is approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sheath. Electrical conductors ( and ) are positioned about the distal end ( ) and passage ( ) of the inner dilator sheath. When energized, the electrical conductor emits an electrical arc which electrically separates encapsulating biological tissue from the elongated electrical structure implanted therein and placed in the passage of the inner elongated dilator sheath.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a lead removal apparatus for removing an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator lead from the heart. The lead removal apparatus includes a proximal handle that further includes a proximal portion, such as an elongate section of intertwined wire, having a compact, pre-formed first configuration, such as one or more coiled loops. The compact shape permits the operator to utilize the proximal portion without requiring the assistance of a second person to help keep it within the sterile field during a procedure. The operator is thus able to constrain or uncoil the proximal portion into a second configuration that is sufficiently straight such that a medical device, such as a dilator sheath, can be advanced thereover to help separate the lead from scar tissue along the vein path. The proximal portion may include sufficient resiliency to substantially return to the first configuration once the sheath has been advanced.

Abstract:
A snare-type device for removing an elongated structure such as, for example, a pacemaker lead. The device first includes a sheath having a first lumen formed therein, the first lumen having a distal end and being dimensioned to receive the elongated structure therein, and being adapted to allow advancement of the sheath along the elongated structure. The sheath also has second and third parallel lumens formed therein, all of the first, second and third lumens being unitarily formed in the sheath. The device also includes a snare contained in the second and third lumens in the sheath. The snare has a snare loop extending out of the second and third lumens, at and generally extending around the distal end of the first lumen.

Abstract:
A locking mechanism for maintaining a position of a catheter on a beaded connector tube of an implantable device. A first lock member has a plurality of slots formed along its outer surface. A second lock member is dimensioned such that at least a slotted portion of the first member is receivable in an axial passageway of the second member. The second member has a plurality of tabs extending into the axial passageway wherein a tab is receivable in a respective slot to form a locking connection between the lock members. The lock members are aligned upon formation of the locking connection wherein the connector tube and catheter are receivable along the respective axial passageways, and the beaded connector tube portion is disposed on an opposite side of the tabs from the implantable device.

Abstract:
A device for extracting an implanted elongated structure from biological tissue comprises a sheath having a plurality of lumens therein opening to the sheath distal end. First and second lumens are disposed along a wall of the sheath, and a third lumen is dimensioned to receive the elongated structure. The sheath wall having the first and second lumens disposed therein is alternately compressible and expandable responsive to a bend along a bending zone of the sheath. A first wire segment is positioned in the first lumen, and a second wire segment is positioned in the second lumen, wherein the respective proximal ends of the segments are affixed proximal to the bending zone. The respective wire segments extend distally in the respective first or second lumen a first distance beyond the distal end of the sheath when the bend compresses the wall surface generally adjacent the first and second lumens, and extend distally a second distance, less than the first distance, when the bend expands the wall surface.

Abstract:
A device for removing from a patient a previously implanted elongated structure, such as a pacemaker lead or a defibrillator lead, that may be encapsulated in biological tissue of the patient. In one form, the device comprises a sheath member having an inside dimension greater than the outside dimension of the elongated structure, and a gripping member positioned about the sheath member. The gripping member has a longitudinal passage extending substantially therethrough, which longitudinal passage is dimensioned to encircle at least a portion of the elongated structure. A proximal portion of the gripping member may extend outwardly beyond the proximal end of the elongated structure and outwardly of at least the vascular system of the patient. The gripping member may comprise a first configuration having a first diameter that is greater than the outside dimension of the elongated structure, and a second configuration having a second diameter that is substantially the same as the outside dimension of the elongated structure.
