Methods And Systems For Controlled Deployment Of Needles In Tissue

US Patent:
8088072, Jan 3, 2012
Filed:
Oct 3, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/245567
Inventors:
Michael Munrow - Belmont CA, US
Jordan Bajor - Palo Alto CA, US
Malcolm G. Munro - Tarzana CA, US
Assignee:
Gynesonics, Inc. - Redwood City CA
International Classification:
A61B 8/14
US Classification:
600464, 600424, 600427, 600439, 600462, 600463
Abstract:
Needles are deployed in tissue under direct ultrasonic or other imaging. To aid in deploying the needle, a visual needle guide is projected on to the image prior to needle deployment. Once the needle guide is properly aligned, the needle can be deployed. After needle deployment, a safety boundary and treatment region are projected on to the screen. After confirming that the safety boundary and treatment regions are sufficient, the patient can be treated using the needle.

Electrosurgical Loop Electrode Instrument For Laparoscopic Surgery

US Patent:
5437665, Aug 1, 1995
Filed:
Oct 12, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/134106
Inventors:
Malcolm G. Munro - Sherman Oaks CA
International Classification:
A61B 1739
US Classification:
606 47
Abstract:
An electrosurgical selectively controllable loop electrode for laparoscopic surgery is set forth which includes a housing having a longitudinal axis and an axially extending cavity forming a passageway through the housing. A shaft member is slideably mounted to the housing within the cavity so as to permit axial and rotational displacement of the shaft member relative to the housing. A wire electrode which has a first end segment and a second end segment is in electrical communication with the shaft member and extends distally therefrom; the wire electrode also has a bridge segment integrally interconnecting the first and second end segments to form a loop. The end segments are biased by a pair of leaf springs of predetermined curvature where the springs are internally biased to open upon extension of the springs distally from the housing and to close upon external forces exerted against the springs by the housing during retraction. In another embodiment of the invention, the first and second end segments have a predetermined equilibirum shape and are self-biased to return to the equilibirum shape when displaced therefrom; the bridge segment integrally interconnecting the first and second end segments to form a loop is responsive to the internal restoring forces created when the bridge segment is displaced from equilibirum and the bridge segment articulates radially with respect to the end segments through a sequence of predetermined shapes.

Endoluminal Ultrasound-Guided Resectoscope

US Patent:
5957849, Sep 28, 1999
Filed:
Jun 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/884980
Inventors:
Malcolm G. Munro - Sherman Oaks CA
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
A61B 800
US Classification:
600459
Abstract:
A surgical implement, such as a surgical electrode, and an ultrasound transducer, both extend through a single elongated insertion member, typically, a catheter. The ultrasound transducer extends from the proximal region of the surgical instrument containing the instrument controls toward the distal end of the catheter from which at least the operative tip of the surgical implement and the ultrasound transducer extend. In one embodiment, the catheter also contains a fiber-optic endoscope, thus allowing visual as well as ultrasound monitoring of the surgical site, before, during and after conduct of the surgical procedures. Means are provided for rotation of the ultrasound transducer to enable generation of a circular tissue reflectivity image transverse to the axis of the ultrasound transducer. Means are also provided for selective longitudinal movement of all elements contained within the catheter. Liquid crystal or other display means are provided to facilitate visual monitoring of the ultrasound and if present the endoscope outputs in real time.
