Method Of Implementing A Forward Compatibility Network Directory Syntax

US Patent:
6424976, Jul 23, 2002
Filed:
Mar 23, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/533442
Inventors:
Brian Jarvis - Orem UT
Layne Izatt - Orem UT
Mark Hinckley - Lincoln UT
Assignee:
Novell, Inc. - Provo UT
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707201
Abstract:
System and method for implementing a forward compatibility syntax in a directory services environment is described. In one embodiment, data comprising an attribute according to a new syntax that is supported by newer servers, but not by older servers, is separated into data with respect to which referential integrity is not a concern (hereinafter âblob dataâ) and data with respect to which referential integrity is a concern (hereinafter Distinguished Names (âDNsâ)). The two types of data are then combined according to a forward compatibility (âFCâ) syntax that is supported by both older and newer servers. Only certain, newer, servers understand and convert between the FC syntax and the actual new syntax; older servers are capable of supporting the FC syntax without needing to understand it.

Enforcing Security On An Attribute Of An Object

US Patent:
7107538, Sep 12, 2006
Filed:
Sep 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/242007
Inventors:
Mark Andrew Hinckley - Lindon UT, US
Dale Robert Olds - Sandy UT, US
Matthew Gerrit Brooks - Orem UT, US
Assignee:
Novell, Inc. - Provo UT
International Classification:
G06F 17/00
US Classification:
715743, 715741, 715742, 707200, 707 10
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and schema are provided for enforcing security on an attribute of an object. An instance of an object is created or modified using the schema where a number of the attributes for the object include descriptors. The attributes of the created or modified object are checked to ensure that the modifier has access rights to the attributes. If the modifier does not have the access rights, then values are not assigned to the attributes requested by the modifier. When the modifier provides values for an attribute having the corresponding descriptor, the values are also checked to determine if they are references to a second object. In which case, a check is made to ensure the modifier has an access right to the second object. If no such access right exists, then the values are not assigned to the attribute as originally requested by the modifier.

Event Notification Facility

US Patent:
5828882, Oct 27, 1998
Filed:
Mar 15, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/617961
Inventors:
Mark Andrew Hinckley - Lindon UT
Assignee:
Novell, Inc. - Orem UT
International Classification:
G06F 940
US Classification:
395680
Abstract:
An event notification facility includes an interface by which programs register for notification of an event. When registering, each program identifies a type of event and a mechanism by which the program is to be notified if and when an event of the identified type occurs. At the program's option, it can request that it be notified "last," i. e. after all other programs have been notified of the event. The event notification facility also includes a means for storing the registration requests and for associating each registration request with a type of event. Once a program is registered to be notified of an event last, the event notification facility rejects all other requests from programs to be notified of the same event last, however preferably other programs can still register for notification of the event. Finally, the event notification facility includes a means for notifying each registered program when the event occurs.
