Philosophy:
As a counseling psychologist, I will work together with you in a variety of ways to resolve problems, conflicts and reduce or contain what bothers you. The goal is for you to function in a way that is more satisfying. We may discuss many parts of your life that could be important in understanding you or where you are in your life. It is important that we have a working relationship and respect each other. We will work together on your feelings and your behaviors that are of concern. Sometimes we will focus on your feelings and other times your behavior. I realize that there are different factors that may contribute to what you are experiencing, such as individual, interpersonal, or social. I am willing to work with others in your life, especially your family, since they are often important in providing support for you. Together we will determine what we work on, and I will facilitate the process based on how you learn. Our combined efforts are to assist you with change, and help resolve problems or conflicts. We will work together to determine when you are âÂÂdoing betterâÂÂ.
I use several types of techniques in our sessions together. My overall technique is Solution Focused Brief Therapy, where the focus is on what has worked for you either currently or in the past. Solutions are built in regard to your problem, with the goal being to have positive change occur as quickly as possible. Another technique used to assist with change includes Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, where the focus is on the ways your thinking influences your behavior or feelings. I also use educational handouts to increase your knowledge and skills. I facilitate practice and instruction in stress reduction, anger management, and life-style management. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is used to assist with anxiety-related concerns, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or anxiety disorders.
