Two Dimensional Modulated Burner Staging Valve

US Patent:
5386851, Feb 7, 1995
Filed:
Jan 12, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/180519
Inventors:
Martin A. Clements - Cincinnati OH
Robert M. Darby - Cincinnati OH
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
F16K 11078
F02C 100
US Classification:
13762517
Abstract:
A fuel valve comprising main fuel valve connected to a burner staging valve such that fuel flow from the main fuel valve is divided between pilot and main domes in a dual annular combustor. The burner staging valve includes a movable spool located within a fixed sleeve such that the spool may be moved both laterally and rotated within predetermined limits. The movable spool and sleeve include pilot, main and inlet windows arranged such that the inlet windows receive fuel from the main fuel valve and the pilot and main windows split the fuel flow between the pilot and main domes of the combustor.

Hydraulic Failsafe System And Method For An Axisymmetric Vectoring Nozzle

US Patent:
6142416, Nov 7, 2000
Filed:
Mar 14, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/818051
Inventors:
David J. Markstein - Hamilton OH
Martin A. Clements - Cincinnati OH
Robert M. Ausdenmoore - West Chester OH
William C. Lippmeier - Loveland OH
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
B63H 1110
US Classification:
244 53R
Abstract:
A nozzle failsafe nozzle actuating system for an aircraft gas turbine engine variable exhaust nozzle having a plurality of pivotal flaps circumferentially disposed about a nozzle centerline and bounding an exhaust gas flowpath in the nozzle is provided with a number of primary actuators which are operably connected to nozzle flaps for pivoting and setting an attitude of the flaps relative to the centerline and wherein each of the primary actuators is extendable between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position, and a failsafe nozzle actuating actuator for setting the attitude of each of the flaps to a failsafe attitude during a failsafe mode of the nozzle actuating system wherein the failsafe attitude is such that each of the primary actuators is at a partially retracted position between the fully extended and the fully retracted positions. A particular embodiment provides actuator assembly wherein a failsafe piston rod of the failsafe actuator is disposed concentrically about a primary rod of the primary actuator and a stop element is provided for the failsafe rod to engage the primary rod when the primary rod is being retracted and the failsafe rod is extended.

Fluid Bleed Apparatus

US Patent:
5010913, Apr 30, 1991
Filed:
Jan 10, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/463073
Inventors:
Martin A. Clements - Cincinnati OH
Assignee:
General Electric Co. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
F16K 3144
US Classification:
137322
Abstract:
An apparatus for bleeding or purging fluid from a fluid line includes a bleed valve permanently affixed to the wall of the fluid line and a valve actuator releasably connected to the bleed valve which is operative to move a spring-biased, one-way valve member in the bleed valve between a valve open and valve closed position. The valve actuator is movable to a valve open position relative to the one-way valve member in response to the spring force exerted by a coil spring or the like, which avoids damage to the biasing spring associated with the one-way valve member. The valve actuator also includes a guard to prevent assembly or disassembly of the valve actuator and bleed valve with the valve actuator in a valve open position.

Safeguard For Fuel Pump

US Patent:
2022040, Dec 22, 2022
Filed:
Jun 15, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/840769
Inventors:
- Dublin 4, IE
Martin Augustine Clements - Loveland OH, US
International Classification:
F04D 15/00
F02C 9/26
Abstract:
A fuel pump system has a start stage pump and a main stage pump. Fuel is supplied to the start stage pump at lower engine speeds. As the engine speed increases, the fuel system restricts fuel to the start stage pump via a pressure regulating valve and the main stage pump takes over. An electronically controlled shut-off valve limits the amount of fuel supplied to the pressure regulating valve and, hence, the start stage pump when closed to safeguard against operating the start stage pump at unsafe engine speeds.

Overspeed Safeguards In Hydraulically Controlled Fuel Boost Pump

US Patent:
2022038, Dec 1, 2022
Filed:
May 27, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/826498
Inventors:
- Dublin 4, IE
Martin Augustine Clements - Loveland OH, US
International Classification:
F15B 15/18
Abstract:
A hydraulic motor-driven fuel boost pump includes redundant safeguards against overspeeding the impellers. A flow limiter limits the amount of hydraulic fluid that can be supplied to the hydraulic motor, thereby limiting the torque that can be applied to the impellers. A control valve also transitions between a non-restrictive operating state and a restrictive operating state. In the restrictive operating state the control valve regulates the displacement of the swash plate when in the non-restrictive operating state. The control valve does not counter the bias of the swash plate control spring when in the restrictive operating state.

Fuel Pump With Determinant Translating Cam Arrangement

US Patent:
2023009, Mar 30, 2023
Filed:
Sep 26, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/952669
Inventors:
- Dublin, IE
Martin Augustine Clements - Loveland OH, US
International Classification:
F04C 15/00
F02M 59/12
F02M 59/20
F04C 2/332
F04C 15/06
Abstract:
A fuel pump includes a cam arrangement surrounding a rotor and disposed within a spacer ring. The cam arrangement is configured to deterministically translate relative to the spacer ring and the rotor during stroking of the pump. An involute gear set provides an interface between the cam arrangement and the spacer ring. In some cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement along a timing line. In other cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement at an angle relative to the timing line.

Electric Pump With Isolated Stator

US Patent:
2023006, Mar 2, 2023
Filed:
Aug 25, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/895704
Inventors:
- Dublin, IE
Martin Augustine Clements - Loveland OH, US
International Classification:
F04D 29/58
F04D 17/16
F04D 25/06
F04D 29/02
F04D 29/051
F04D 29/057
F04D 29/08
F04D 29/44
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to an electric pump including a housing defining an inlet and an outlet. The electric pump includes a rotor and stator within the housing. The rotor is liquid cooled by working fluid of the pump and the stator is positioned in a dry chamber that is sealed to prevent the working fluid from entering the dry chamber. A heat exchanger is used to cool the stator. An impeller driven by the rotor draws working fluid into the housing through the inlet. The working fluid passes through the heat exchanger to draw heat from the stator before reaching the impeller. The working fluid is discharged from the housing through the outlet by the impeller.

Controlling Pressure On A Journal Bearing

US Patent:
2023003, Feb 2, 2023
Filed:
Jul 26, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/873958
Inventors:
- Dublin, IE
Martin Augustine Clements - Loveland OH, US
International Classification:
F04C 15/00
F04C 2/08
F01C 21/02
Abstract:
A groove is applied to one or more contact surfaces of a journal bearing of a pump to increase a force applied to the contact surface(s). Each groove has an end exposed to discharge pressure of the pump so that the groove communicates the discharge pressure across the contact surface. The groove reduces an area of the contact surface over which fluid leakage results in a pressure differential, thereby increasing a net force applied to the contact surface. Applying the groove to the axial end face of the journal bearing enhances an axial force applied to the journal bearing whereas applying the groove to a radially facing land reduces friction between the journal bearing and the outer housing.
