An improved electrical insulation tape is formed from a sheet of fiberglass cloth having a layer of thermoplastic resin bonded thereto. The thermoplastic resin layer is applied to the fiberglass sheet by melting the resin while contacting the fiberglass, and then the composite is cooled to bond the two components together. The composite sheet is then slit into tapes with substantially no unraveling of the fiberglass component at the slit edges of the tapes. The resultant tapes are easily wrapped on, and adhered to, conductors, such as magnet wire, or the like, by remelting and resolidifying the thermoplastic layer. The tape possesses excellent dielectric properties and heat dissipation properties. Alternatively, the fiberglass sheet may be impregnated with the melted thermoplastic component whereby a composite, rather than a relatively definitive two layer laminate, is formed.

Magnet wire is insulated with a paper insulation sheet which is longitudinally wrapped onto the wire. The paper sheet is precoated on one side with a layer of resinous adhesive dielectric material such as a thermoplastic polyester. The outside surface of the paper sheet has the resinous coating applied thereto and solidified prior to the time that the paper is wrapped onto the wire. Just prior to applying the paper to the wire, an edge of the resin coating is heated sufficiently to locally remelt the resin. The remelted edge is then overlapped by the opposite edge as the coated paper is wrapped onto the wire, whereby the edges of the insulation sheet are adhered together. The wrapped wire is then passed through one or more heated dies in order to remelt the entire resin coating, which remelted coating is then drawn back over the exterior of the paper layer. The wrapped wire is then passed through a water quench bath. The paper wrap is thus recoated in situ with the resin, thereby forming a continuous and uninterrupted resinous jacket on the paper and wire.

Improved electrical insulating tapes are disclosed having a poly(ethylene terephthalate) film component. The film has one amorphous surface and an opposite crystalline surface. In a preferred embodiment, a composite insulating material is provided having the film component with a fiber glass yarn strand layer adhered thereto. The fiber glass yarn strands are substantially continuous and uninterrupted, and are substantially parallel to the axis of elongation of the tape, and to each other.

A flexible, tough electrical insulation is described for use in electric motors, generators, hermetic motors, transformers, and other electrical devices. The insulation described herein includes a layer of a cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate polymer (PCT), or one or more copolymers thereof. The PCT layer can be used in a film or in a nonwoven mat form, by itself, or alternatively, as a component of a laminate. The insulation can take the form of an insulating tape, an insulating sheet, an electric motor slot liner, motor wedges, or as some other die-cut insulating component. The insulation and products protected by the insulation can be used in a broad range of service application temperatures.
