Winder Splicing Nip Guard

US Patent:
6616085, Sep 9, 2003
Filed:
Feb 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/076030
Inventors:
Lawrence J. Fuchs - Denmark WI
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI
David R. Mulry - Combined Locks WI
Assignee:
Metso Paper, Inc. - Helsinki
International Classification:
B65H 6300
US Classification:
242534, 242548, 242913
Abstract:
A guard is mounted for rotation about the downstream drum of a winder having two spaced apart winder drums which support a paper roll. The guard has a D-shaped leading-edge which approaches the paper roll. The leading-edge is articulated so that if an operators hand becomes wedged between the leading-edge and the paper roll, articulation on the leading-edge closes a switch which brings the winder to a stop. A hydraulic actuator extends between a lowermost radial edge of each sector shaped extension and a fixed support. Operation of the hydraulic actuator causes the guard to rotate about the axis of the downstream winder drum so as to be between an operator and the downstream side of the winder drum. The leading edge of the the guard is positioned to limit operator access to the nip formed between the paper roll and the downstream winder drum.

Electromagnetic Brake In A Slitter

US Patent:
7017849, Mar 28, 2006
Filed:
Mar 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/395042
Inventors:
Lawrence J. Fuchs - Denmark WI, US
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI, US
Assignee:
Metso Paper, Inc. - Helsinki
International Classification:
B65H 23/10
B65H 23/26
US Classification:
2424199, 2424193, 2421561, 2421562
Abstract:
An idler roll brake in a paper handing machine employs an electromagnet positioned close to the periphery all of the idler roll which interacts with and induces eddy currents a conducive roll and a gear shaped steel ring fitted within the conducive roll. The electromagnet is arranged transverse to the axis of the roll and has three poles. The gear-shaped steel ring forms opposite poles which are attracted to the poles of the electromagnet which bring the roll to complete stop. An alternative embodiment roll brake employs a brake shoe mounted to the roll end bearing. The brake shoe slides forward to bring the brake shoe against the interior surface of the roll. An electromagnet positioned beneath the roll attracts a ferromagnetic armature or permanent magnet mounted to the brake to pull the brake shoe into engagement with the inner surface of the roll.

Electromechanical Brake In A Slitter

US Patent:
7114674, Oct 3, 2006
Filed:
Sep 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/225762
Inventors:
Lawrence J. Fuchs - Denmark WI, US
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI, US
Assignee:
Metso Paper, Inc. - Helsinki
International Classification:
B65H 23/10
B65H 23/26
US Classification:
2424199, 2424193, 2421561, 2421562, 188161
Abstract:
An idler roll brake in a paper handing machine wherein the roll brake employs a brake shoe mounted to the roll end bearing. The brake shoe slides forward to bring the brake shoe against the interior surface of the roll. An electromagnet positioned external to and mounted closely spaced from the cylindrical shell the roll attracts a ferromagnetic armature or permanent magnet mounted to the brake to pull the brake shoe into engagement with the inner surface of the roll.

Four Column Positioning Mechanism For Calender Machines

US Patent:
4485734, Dec 4, 1984
Filed:
Mar 24, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/478442
Inventors:
Paul J. Klemmer - Appleton WI
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI
Assignee:
Appleton Machine Company - Appleton WI
International Classification:
B30B 304
US Classification:
100168
Abstract:
A positioning mechanism for four column calender machines is disclosed. The mechanism employs an interconnected piston and cylinder arrangement to permit the rolls to be quickly separated and subsequently automatically repositioned. The rolls are supported on a plate assembly movable on a vertically disposed way mounted on the columns. A lost motion arrangement is provided in the plate assembly so that when a paper break occurs or when it is otherwise desired to separate the rolls quickly, the cylinders are released permitting rapid relative movement between the rolls to prevent damage.

Method For Calibrating The Position Of The Slitter Blades Of A Slitter-Winder

US Patent:
2014024, Aug 28, 2014
Filed:
Feb 22, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/774382
Inventors:
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI, US
Assignee:
Metso Paper, Inc. - Helsinki
International Classification:
G01B 21/16
US Classification:
356 72
Abstract:
The positions of the slitter blades of a slitter-winder are calibrated using a laser to perform measurement and calibration of the fiber web cutting point of each slitter blade pair. Measurement and calibration is preformed on the top slitter blade of each of a multiplicity of slitter blade pairs one after another. The laser measures one slitter blade of each slitter blade pair while they are engaged. The slitter blade pairs between the laser and the slitter blade pair being measured are not engaged. Carriages which support the slitter blades have position sensors which the laser measurements calibrate and the blade pair positions are measured and the carriage positions are read simultaneously. The cutting edges of the slitter blades are sharpened to have straight sides and the laser measurement system is located so the laser beam is directed to the straight side.

Slitter-Winder Of A Fiber Production Line

US Patent:
2014013, May 22, 2014
Filed:
Nov 19, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/680843
Inventors:
- Helsinki, FI
Michael J. Daul - Appleton WI, US
Assignee:
METSO PAPER, INC. - Helsinki
International Classification:
B65H 35/02
US Classification:
242525
Abstract:
The invention relates to a winder guard in a two-drum winder which combines the web cutting and the winder guard functions to one device. The winder guard is movable in an arcuate path around the front (downstream) winding drum. The winder guard has an upstream edge on which a cutting blade is mounted so as to align with the winder guard, and pass between the two winding drums and then to be bent to engage the rear (upstream) winding drum so as to cut a plurality of partial fiber webs WP slit from a machine web W in a slitter and wrapped around the rear winding drum onto winding cores around which customer rolls are wound. Adequate space beneath the winding drums for maintenance and broke cleanup is provided by winder guard movement along an arcuate path around the front winding drum.
