US Classification:
445 26, 445 3, 313634
Abstract:
A quartz arc tube for a metal halide lamps and its method of making are described. The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900Â C. which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

Reflector Lamp Having Reduced Seal Temperature

US Patent:
7030543, Apr 18, 2006
Filed:
Feb 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/785611
Inventors:
Miguel Galvez - Danvers MA, US
Walter P. Lapatovich - Boxford MA, US
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H01J 1/02
US Classification:
313 25, 313634
Abstract:
The seal temperature of a reflector lamp having a ceramic metal halide light source is reduced by a light absorbing layer which is provided in a region of the outer jacket adjacent to the electrode seal. Light reflected within the neck cavity of the reflector lamp impinges on the light absorbing layer and is absorbed before it can reach the electrode seal which is at least partially located in the neck of the reflector. The heat from the absorbed light is conducted into the base of the lamp to be dissipated in the socket.

A light source system is arranged about an axis, and includes a planar member having top and bottom surfaces with a central aperture and a plurality of electrical conductors spaced about the central aperture and extending beyond the top and bottom surfaces. A portion of the electrical conductors extending beyond the top surface have electrical insulators. A base having passages to receive the electrical conductors extends beyond the bottom surface and includes a boss on the top surface fitted through the aperture. A body has a first part coaxial with the axis and a second part transverse to the axis. A light source is positioned near an end of the first part. The base is positioned at an opposite end of the body and a plurality of rod-like members project from the second part parallel to the axis; and a light emitting diode is positioned adjacent the first part.

Tubular Blue Led Lamp With Remote Phosphor

US Patent:

Jun 25, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/145895
Inventors:
Miguel Galvez - Danvers MA, US
Maria Anc - Groveland MA, US
Richard Speer - Concord MA, US
William A. George - Lynn MA, US
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
F21V 29/00
US Classification:
362294, 362 84, 362218, 36231102, 36231104, 36231111
Abstract:
A lamp includes a linearly extending heat sink, blue-light-emitting LEDs mounted on the heat sink, and a light emitting cover mounted on the heat sink in line with the LEDs, a first portion of the cover opposite the LEDs including a phosphor that is excited by the LEDs to emit white light. The cover may be a tube with the LEDs outside the tube, a portion of the tube nearest the LEDs being transparent and receiving light from the LEDs. The tube may include reflectors that are attached to an exterior surface of the tube to hold the tube on the heat sink. Alternatively, the cover may enclose the LEDs on the heat sink, where a portion of the cover has an interior surface that reflects light from the LEDs to the first portion. The lamp may include electrical connections that allow for multiple lamps to be connected in series.

Led Light Engine Kernel And Method Of Making The Kernel

US Patent:
7897985, Mar 1, 2011
Filed:
Mar 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/048416
Inventors:
Miguel Galvez - Danvers MA, US
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H01L 33/00
US Classification:
257 98, 257 88, 257E33001, 257E21001, 438 26, 438 55
Abstract:
A light engine kernel for a light emitting diode (LED) includes a solid body of transparent material having an index of refraction of at least 1. 5. The body has a domed, light-emitting top that is an inverted parabola of revolution, a reflective sidewall that is a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC), and a cavity at a focus of the CPC that is adapted to receive an LED. The domed top may include a phosphor coating of a yellow-emitting phosphor. The cavity may be adapted to receive only a single LED or plural LEDs of the same or different colors on a board. The kernel and LED are not integrally formed, reducing thermal degradation of the phosphor coating and improving application flexibility.
