Priming Fuel System Method And Apparatus For Marine Engines

US Patent:
6622708, Sep 23, 2003
Filed:
Jun 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/879468
Inventors:
Charles W. Braun - Livonia NY
Chris C. Begley - Ortonville MI
Michael J. Niemiec - Brighton MI
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F02M 3704
US Classification:
123516, 12317917, 123510
Abstract:
A fuel system for fluidly connecting a fuel tank with an engine includes a low-pressure fuel circuit connected to the fuel tank. A high-pressure fuel circuit connected to the engine is supplied with fuel by the low-pressure fuel circuit. A priming fuel circuit includes a priming fuel conduit and a priming valve. The priming fuel conduit has a first segment and a second segment. The priming valve has an inlet and an outlet. The first segment of the priming fuel circuit interconnects the low-pressure fuel circuit and the outlet of the priming valve. The second segment of the priming fuel circuit interconnects the high-pressure fuel circuit and the inlet of the priming valve. The priming valve is operable to control a flow of fluid through the priming fuel conduit to thereby selectively connect and disconnect the high-pressure fuel circuit and the low-pressure fuel circuit.

Fuel Sensor System

US Patent:
6679226, Jan 20, 2004
Filed:
Nov 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/997371
Inventors:
David H. Burke - Flint MI
Michael J. Niemiec - Brighton MI
Charles R. Harrington - Troy MI
David K. Lambert - Sterling Heights MI
Han-Sheng Lee - Bloomfield Hills MI
Su-Chee S. Wang - Troy MI
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F02M 3704
US Classification:
123509, 123514
Abstract:
A fuel sensor system for a vehicle includes a fuel pump adapted to be disposed in a fuel tank to pump fuel from the fuel tank to an engine of the vehicle. The fuel sensor system also includes a fuel sensor adapted to be disposed in the fuel tank to measure a property index of the fuel. The fuel sensor system further includes a jet pump connected to the fuel pump to fill the fuel sensor with a fuel sample of the fuel.

Fuel Sampling Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
2003014, Jul 31, 2003
Filed:
Jan 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/062581
Inventors:
David Burke - Flint MI, US
Michael Niemiec - Brighton MI, US
Charles Harrington - Troy MI, US
David Lambert - Sterling Heights MI, US
International Classification:
G01N001/14
F02D041/00
US Classification:
073/863840, 123/179160, 123/00100A
Abstract:
A method of reducing engine cold start up emissions and an apparatus for isolating a fuel sample for testing purposes. According to the methodology the driveability index of the fuel is sensed utilizing an onboard sensor and the sensed fuel driveability index is inputted to the engine controller for utilization by the engine controller in determining the fueling algorithm for minimizing emissions during the next cold start up of the engine. The sensor determines the driveability index by evaluating a fuel sample collected onboard during the previous running cycle of the engine. The fuel sample is pumped from the vehicle fuel tank to an onboard collection point by the vehicle fuel pump during the previous running cycle of the engine. The fuel sampling apparatus includes a sample cup, a cylinder having a bore and an inlet port for connection to the fuel pump and a piston rod defining an axial passage having an inlet port and a discharge port. The piston rod is mounted in the bore for movement between an operative position in which the passage inlet port communicates with the cylinder inlet port and the passage discharge port is positioned in overlying relation to the sample cup and a retracted position in which the passage inlet port is blocked from communication with the cylinder inlet port and the discharge port is withdrawn from the sample cup whereby to isolate a fuel sample in the sample cup.

Engine Control Method And Apparatus Using A Fuel Volatility Sensor

US Patent:
2003021, Nov 20, 2003
Filed:
May 16, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/146743
Inventors:
David Lambert - Sterling Heights MI, US
Gary Charles Abusamra - Grand Blanc MI, US
Charles Robert Harrington - Troy MI, US
John Kirwan - Troy MI, US
Han-Sheng Lee - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Michael Joseph Niemiec - Brighton MI, US
International Classification:
F02M051/00
US Classification:
123/491000
Abstract:
The invention provides an improvement over conventional engine controls by directly measuring fuel volatility, and using this measured value to adjust the engine air/fuel ratio during engine start and initial operation. Engine startability and initial operation are improved as compared to conventional engine control systems by compensating the engine air/fuel ratio during engine start and initial engine operation, using a direct measurement of the fuel volatility.
