The production of novel polyester resins is disclosed as is the preparation of high solids coatings and paints containing the same. The polyester resins are produced by reacting a mixture comprising: (a) A saturated fatty acid having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms in an amount between about 3 and about 8 percent; (b) A polyol in an amount between 40 and 50 percent, said polyol consisting of between about 55 and 75 percent of a triol with the remainder being a diol; (c) A polycarboxylic acid in an amount of about 45 to about 55 percent, said polycarboxylic acid consisting of between 65 and 75 percent of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid with the remainder being aliphatic acid having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. The coatings and paints are preferably prepared by reacting the polyester resin with an aminoplast resin to cause cross-linking.

Acrylic latices containing epoxy resins are prepared by emulsion polymerization in which an epoxy resin (polyepoxide) is incorporated into at least one of the monoethylenic monomers, including an epoxy-reactive monomer, and the monomers including the epoxy resin are emulsified into water containing surfactant to provide the oil phase of an oil-in-water emulsion. The monomers are then polymerized in the aqueous emulsion using a free radical polymerization catalyst and a reaction temperature which does not cause premature reaction between the epoxy groups and the reactive monomer. This provides thermosetting latex particles of fine particle size in the presence of less emulsifying agent than is normally needed.

A water reducible epoxy ester is prepared by reacting an epoxy resin, preferably a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and a monofunctional epoxy, such as phenyl glycidyl ether, with a dibasic acid (e. g. , azelaic acid) followed by reaction with trimellitic anhydride and neutralization of free carboxyl groups. This material is dispersed in an aqueous vehicle, applied to a metal substrate and baked.

Water reducible self crosslinking epoxy ester-acrylate polymers are prepared by partially esterifying the epoxy groups of a polyepoxide with an ethylenically unsaturated fatty acid or a saturated fatty acid and copolymerizing the ester product with monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including methacrylic acid and an alkoxymethylacrylamide or alkoxymethylmethacrylamide, to afford a self crosslinking acid copolymer. This copolymer is solubilized in water with a volatile base, e. g. , ammonia, trimethylamine, or dimethylethanolamine. Formulations based on these polymers are useful as metal coatings.
